Ethel Kennedy hospitalized after suffering a stroke: ‘Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers’

Ethel Kennedy has been hospitalized after suffering a stroke, according to her grandson Joe Kennedy III.

The 96-year-old widow of Robert F. Kennedy suffered the stroke in her sleep last week, the former Massachusetts congressman posted on social media Tuesday evening.

“She was brought to an area hospital, where she is now receiving treatment,” Ethel’s grandson posted. “She is comfortable, she is getting the best care possible, and she is surrounded by family.

“She is, as you may know, a strong woman who has led a remarkably fulfilling life,” JKIII added. “We are here looking after her. Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers.”

The Kennedy family matriarch, the mother of 11 children, founded the Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights nonprofit in 1969 to carry forth her husband’s legacy. RFK was assassinated while running for president in 1968.

Ethel has also co-chaired the Coalition of Gun Control, and has been involved with other human rights organizations.

“For more than half a century, my mom has been a champion for justice, standing with human rights defenders around the globe,” her daughter Kerry Kennedy posted when Ethel turned 96 earlier this year.

“Her courage and dedication to #HumanRights motivate our team every day, inspiring us to hold governments accountable, promote human rights education and #YouthOrganizing, advance #dignity and #equality in workplaces and investment communities, and uplift grassroots changemakers,” Kerry wrote.

Her grandson JFKIII shared on Tuesday that Ethel had a great summer and early fall.

“Every day she enjoyed time with her children, nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren,” he posted. “She was able to get out on the water, visit the pier, and enjoy many lunches and dinners with family. It has been a gift to all of us and to her as well.”
