Meet of Champions: Westford’s Paul Bergeron defends his Div. 1 boys title

DEVENS — One “crazy surge” was all Westford Academy’s Paul Bergeron needed to defend his Div. 1 Meet of Champions title in cold, overcast conditions Saturday.

Bergeron, who was coming off a win in the Div. 1A race last Saturday at Gardner, followed B.C. High’s Chris Larnard and teammate Jack Graffeo until he surged hard and ran all-out for a half mile on the rolling 3.1-mile layout.

From there Bergeron made it look easy as he cruised home in 15 minutes, 6.43 seconds for the fastest time of the day. Larnard had a terrific day, surging for second place in 15:25.21 and Graffeo finished strong for third in 15:31.47.

Even getting to the championship part of the season wasn’t academic for Bergeron. He went a month without running shortly after the Ocean State Invitational, where he placed second, because of a back issue. Bergeron, though, cross-trained when he was sidelined and loss very little of his cardiovascular fitness.

The speed bump only made the Stanford-bound harrier’s win that more satisfying.

“It was a lot more significant because it came after an injury earlier in the season,” Bergeron said. “From 2 to 2-1/2 miles I pushed as hard as I could. Chris took it out and made the pace honest.”

Bergeron is now looking ahead to the Foot Locker Northeast Regional Championships next Saturday at Franklin Park. Bergeron was third last year and is now looking for a win and another trip to San Diego for the nationals.

“My goal is to go out there and win,” he said. “Obviously the goal today was to win, but I wanted to save something for Foot Locker.”

After a fifth-place finish in a controlled effort at the Div. 1A Championships, the powerful Brookline team had its game face on, racing away with the win with just 54 points. That score easily outdistanced Newton South (114 points) and B.C. High (164 points).

Brookline head coach Mike Glennon moved his roster around for the Div. 1A race so he could rest some of his harriers for an all-out effort. The Warrriors will be competing at the Nike Team Regionals next Saturday in Wappinger Falls, N.Y.

Led by seventh-place Ben Kasen, Brookline placed four runners in the top 15 to easily clinch the title.

In the Div. 3 race, Littleton’s terrific runner, Tim Rank, held off Greater Lowell Tech’s Devin Moreau for a 15:44.63 win. Moreau, who has been a model of consistency all season, captured the silver medal in 15:46.18. One of the pre-race favorites, Marcus Reilly of Northbridge, was third in 16:04.70.

To no one’s suprise, Nashoba Regional’s Adam Balewicz ran away with the Div. 2 race with a time of 15:33.29. Marblehead’s Issac Gross was second in 16:04.50. Danvers captured the team title with 92 points, led by fourth-place finisher Sean Moore (16:10.90).
