General Motors is making it clear that the heavy-duty diesel horsepower war is nowhere near finished. GM has officially teased a new 8.3-liter Duramax turbo-diesel V8 known as the “Mongoose,” an engine that will power the refreshed 2027 Chevrolet Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD. The company has not released horsepower or torque figures yet, but with 8.3 liters of displacement and some not-so-subtle marketing aimed directly at Ford, expectations are already sky high.

The Mongoose name is no accident. Ford’s 6.7-liter Power Stroke diesel has long carried the internal “Scorpion” nickname, and GM leaned directly into that rivalry with a teaser showing a mongoose attacking a scorpion. It is classic Detroit trash talk translated into engine development, and it gives a pretty clear indication of what GM wants this new Duramax to accomplish. The current Ford Power Stroke can produce 500 horsepower and 1,200 lb-ft of torque, so GM will almost certainly be under pressure to meet or exceed those figures when it finally reveals the Mongoose’s output.

The new engine will replace the current 6.6-liter Duramax V8 used in the Silverado HD and Sierra HD. That engine is hardly weak, producing 470 horsepower and 975 lb-ft of torque, but heavy-duty truck buyers have watched Ford and Ram continue raising the bar in recent years. Moving all the way to 8.3 liters gives GM significantly more displacement to work with, potentially opening the door to more torque, improved towing capability, and greater performance under sustained heavy loads.

What makes the announcement especially interesting is how unapologetically old-school it feels at a time when so much of the auto industry is focused on electrification. Heavy-duty pickups remain one of the places where diesel engines still make tremendous sense, particularly for customers who tow regularly, rack up highway miles, or need serious low-rpm pulling power. GM clearly sees plenty of life left in the segment, and the investment required to develop an all-new large-displacement Duramax suggests the company expects diesel HD trucks to remain important for years to come.

For now, GM is keeping the Mongoose’s full specifications under wraps, which only adds to the anticipation surrounding the refreshed 2027 Silverado HD and Sierra HD. We know the engine is real, we know it displaces 8.3 liters, and we know GM has Ford’s Power Stroke squarely in its sights. If the production numbers live up to the attitude of the teaser campaign, the next chapter of the Detroit heavy-duty truck battle could be one of the most entertaining yet.
