Scituate takes down Norwell in overtime to claim Old Oaken Bucket
PEMBROKE – There are many rivalries that stand the test of time, but few can compare to the one Norwell and Scituate have developed in boys hockey in recent decades.
On Thursday, the Sailors decided to get the New Year off to a dramatic start. Junior captain Shane Ryan buried a pair of goals, including the game-winner in overtime as Scituate claimed the Old Oaken Bucket trophy for a third straight season with a thrilling 3-2 victory over the Clippers at Hobomock Arena.
“It’s everything,” Ryan said. “This game is always going to be competitive. It’s always a war. So, we’ve got to come in with a ‘war’ mentality. We got it done again.”

It was the 22nd time the neighboring rivals had battled for the trophy, a series that dates back to the 2004-05 season. The Sailors (4-2-1) scored first, as Ryan collected a loose puck in front of the net, then sniped twine to give Scituate a 1-0 edge with 7:53 remaining in the opening period.
However, Norwell (5-2-1) answered 3:06 later. Jaxon Hoey fired a shot home on the other end, as the Clippers drew even in quick succession.
Just 1:07 into the second period, Norwell pulled ahead in highlight-reel fashion. After corralling the puck by the opposing blue line, Jacob Malinowski opted to fire a rocket on net from distance. The attempt whistled through traffic, and came to its landing spot in the back of the cage as Norwell seized a 2-1 lead.
The score held until the waning minutes of regulation, when Marty Monahan gained possession at center ice. The sophomore defenseman tried to dump the puck into the opposing end as his team attempted a line change. In highlight-reel fashion, it turned out to be a line shot, which flew right into the upper-left corner of the opposing net as Scituate drew even at 2-all with 3:13 to play.
For a second straight year, the Old Oaken Bucket battle was headed to overtime.
“It felt great, especially coming back,” said Scituate coach Brian Hurcombe. “We knew they had a couple of good lines. It’s a fast team. They’re physical. We knew what we had to do. We felt in the first two periods that we weren’t getting it done. So it was good to see us kick it into gear in the third, get the score even. Then, I feel like we dominated the overtime. It might have just been a product of us wearing them down. We played three lines, they played mostly two lines.”

With 1:11 left in the extra session, Ryan hauled in the puck, then skated his way around the Clippers’ defensive front. When he saw a shooting lane, the junior uncorked a missile, and finished it as the Sailors stormed the ice.
TJ McGuiggin added an assist for Scituate. Evan Shea and Knox Poulin dished out assists for Norwell.
“In overtime, we just imposed our will on them and finally got one,” Hurcombe said. “We needed it, because we hadn’t won in three games. We started out 3-0, dropped a couple to good teams, and then just tied Barnstable. So we haven’t won in a while. So, we needed that. I think it’s going to give us a little bit of juice going into Plymouth North on Saturday.”
