Minnesota United head coach Eric Ramsay linked to French job

Minnesota United fans won’t be ringing in the New Year with this development: Loons head coach Eric Ramsay is “under consideration” for another coaching job, according to The Guardian on Thursday.

Ramsay has been mentioned for the opening at Strasbourg, a club in the France’s Ligue 1, a domino further down the line after English Premier League club, Chelsea, parted ways with Enzo Maresca on Thursday. Strasbourg coach Liam Rosenoir is mentioned as an option to take over for Maresca in London.

Guardian reporter Jacob Steinberg said: “A move for Rosenior will also depend on the quality of replacement Strasbourg can find for the 41-year-old. Eric Ramsay, the manager of Minnesota United, is under consideration.”

Chelsea and Strasbourg share the same owners and Ramsay has connections to Chelsea, having coaching their Under-23 team from 2019-21.

Ramsay has blazed a different career path. At age 32, the Welshman left an assistant role at Manchester United to come to Minnesota and become the youngest coach in MLS in 2024. He speaks Spanish and French, he appears open to taking another unique fork in the road for his future.

When talking about his improving French skills, Ramsay told the Pioneer Press last May: “If, for example, tomorrow, I had an offer from PSG (Paris Saint-Germain FC) to go and be their manager, I feel pretty confident (that) in a couple of months, I’ll be able to get to a really proficient level.”

With Minnesota, Ramsay took the Loons to two straight Wester Conference semifinals in 2024 and ’25. He also led United to the U.S. Open Cup semifinal in 2025.

Ramsay has been mentioned as an option for a few other jobs, including Southampton last winter, but he returned to Minnesota.
