Patriots snatch up former Browns veteran running back for added depth
FOXBORO — The Patriots signed their third running back in just two days Wednesday when they added D’Ernest Johnson to the practice squad.
Johnson was released from the Cardinals’ practice squad Tuesday and was already in the Patriots’ locker room by Wednesday afternoon.
Johnson, 29, provides veteran experience behind Rhamondre Stevenson, TreVeyon Henderson and Terrell Jennings. The Patriots also added running backs Jonathan Ward and Rushawn Baker to their practice squad Tuesday while placing running back Jashaun Corbin on practice squad injured reserve.
Johnson has 215 career carries for 989 yards with three touchdowns. He’s also added 53 catches for 465 yards, 33 kick returns for 772 yards and five punt returns for 22 yards in seven NFL seasons.
His best year came in 2021 with the Browns when he rushed for 534 yards on 100 carries with three touchdowns and caught 19 passes for 137 yards.
Johnson went undrafted out of USF in 2018 and spent a year out of football. He has since spent time with the Browns, Jaguars, Ravens and Cardinals.
