St. Paul: I-94 downtown closed from Friday to Monday

This weekend in St. Paul westbound Interstate 94 between Interstate 35E and Dale Street and eastbound I-94 between Minnesota Highway 280 and University Avenue East in St. Paul will be closed due to the John Ireland Boulevard bridge rebuild, according to state transportation officials.

The closure will be from 10 p.m. Friday through 5 a.m. Monday.

The Marion Street ramp onto eastbound I-94 and the westbound I-94 ramp onto Marion St. also will close beginning two hours earlier at 8 p.m. Friday.

Detours

Weekend traffic on westbound I-94 will be detoured from northbound I-35E to westbound Minnesota Highway 36 to southbound Minnesota Highway 280. Traffic on eastbound I-94 will be directed to northbound 280 to eastbound 36 to southbound I-35E.

As part of this closure, the Fifth Street ramp leaving downtown St. Paul onto westbound I-94 also will be closed from 9 p.m. Friday through 2 a.m. Saturday.

10th Street ramp closure through Oct. 28

Meanwhile, the 10th St. ramp exiting eastbound I-94 into downtown St. Paul will be closed through Tuesday, Oct. 28. Eastbound I-94 traffic entering downtown will be detoured to the Kellogg Blvd. exit on I-94.

Future ramp closures

Upcoming ramp closures as part of the project include:

• Marion Street ramp onto eastbound I-94 and westbound I-94 ramp onto Marion Street closing at 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 24 through 5 a.m. Monday, Oct. 27.

• Fifth Street ramp leaving downtown St. Paul onto westbound I-94 closing at 9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 24 through 2 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 25.

The John Ireland Blvd. bridge has four lanes of traffic over I-94. The Minnesota Department of Transportation is in the midst of taking it apart and rebuilding it. The new bridge design is intended to improve pedestrian safety with sidewalk, biking and accessibility updates.
