Red Sox lineups: Kyle Harrison looks to help club clinch playoff spot

One more win separates the Red Sox from their first postseason appearance since 2021.

Kyle Harrison, one of the newest members of the team, will have a chance Friday to be the one that gets the club over the finish line.

The 24-year-old left-hander, one of the players acquired in June’s Rafael Devers trade, will get the start for the Red Sox in Friday’s series opener against the Detroit Tigers.

The game will not be broadcast on NESN or any other traditional TV channel and will instead be streamed exclusively on Apple TV+.

Harrison has spent the majority of his time with the Red Sox since the blockbuster trade in Triple-A, but he has also pitched well since his recent promotion. The lefty has allowed just one earned run over nine innings across two appearances, and last time out he gave up the one run over six innings with five strikeouts in a 6-3 win over the Tampa Bay Rays.

He will square off against Detroit Tigers right-hander Casey Mize (14-6, 3.91).

What at one point looked like it would be a meaningless series for the Tigers is now vitally important. Detroit has gone 2-11 in its last 13 games, blowing a 9.5-game AL Central lead to the Cleveland Guardians. Entering Friday the Tigers and Guardians are tied in the standings, but because Cleveland owns the tiebreaker they would be the division champions if the season ended today, while the Tigers would be the third Wild Card team and the last club in the field.

Even if the Red Sox do not win on Friday, they can still clinch a playoff berth with one more loss this weekend by the Houston Astros. The Astros open a three-game series against the Los Angeles Angels tonight at 9:38 p.m., so the result of that game probably won’t be known until well after Boston’s game is finished.
