Country club murder suspect arraigned, due back in court next month

A man accused of killing a dinner guest at the Sky Meadow Country Club in Nashua, New Hampshire, on Saturday and shooting two others made his first court appearance on Monday and was ordered to remain locked up by a judge until a probable cause hearing next month.

Hunter Nadeau, 23, of Nashua, is accused of second degree murder over the shooting death of 59-year-old Robert Steven DeCesare, who was having dinner with his family when he was gunned down.

According to prosecutors, Nadeau is an ex-employee of the country club and was not politically motivated to violence, despite early reports from witnesses that he shouted “free Palestine” before he opened fire, scattering guests attending a wedding and restaurant patrons.

Nadeau, who appeared virtually before Judge Tanya Spony in Nashua Circuit Court, was ordered held without bail ahead of an October 1 probable cause hearing.

“You are going to remain incarcerated,” Spony told Nadeau on Monday.

Nadeau did not enter a plea during his arraignment.

It is likely Nadeau will face further charges for shooting two others and causing a panic which led four more patrons to injury, New Hampshire Attorney General John Formella said at a press conference held Sunday in Nashua.

The alleged shooter shouted several other things unrelated to Palestine during the tragic and chaotic event, according to the AG, leading investigators to believe that his shouted statements were meant to cause confusion and panic, not to represent a particular political viewpoint.

“The investigation is in the early stages,” Formella said. “At this point, we don’t have any evidence to indicate that this was a hate-based act.”

Formella said that there was no known connection between DeCesare and Nadeau. Assistant Attorney General Peter Hinckley reiterated that assertion following Nadeau’s brief court appearance.

Charlene DeCesare, the widow of Robert DeCesare, said in an email that she was “unbelievably traumatized” and was focusing on caring for the couple’s children in the aftermath of the shootings.

“Our lives are forever changed in one moment that would be senseless except for the belief that Rob was trying to protect me and my daughter, and maybe others there too. In our hearts, he’s a hero,” she said.

One of Nadeau’s other alleged victims, an employee of the country club, is in critical but stable condition, while the condition of the second shooting suspect is unknown, prosecutors said on Monday.
