Editorial: Trump’s a great election punching bag for progressive pols

Donald Trump is a progressive politician’s best friend. Especially during election season.

Mayor Michelle Wu is riding the anti-Trump train for all it’s worth, doubling down on her pro-sanctuary city stance despite a federal order to dismantle its protections for illegal immigrants.

She went full photo op this week, surrounded by a huge crowd of community leaders, residents, and elected officials to address a letter from U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi.

“Stop attacking our cities to hide your administration’s failures. Unlike the Trump administration, Boston follows the law, and Boston will not back down from who we are or what we stand for. We will not back away from our community that has made us the safest city in the country,” Wu said.

Boston does follow the law, just not the law against entering the U.S. illegally. That’s in the “look the other way” pile. As for Boston being the safest city in the country, the community to thank is the Boston Police Department and its officers, as well as ERO Boston, which has arrested illegal immigrant fentanyl traffickers and child rapists, among other offenders.

That’s how you keep a city safe.

But Wu isn’t backing down on the Boston Trust Act, which limits local cooperation with federal immigration authorities. Not when she’s up for reelection.

So Wu swung for the fences, saying that the Trump administration’s “false and continuous” attacks on Boston and other cities, including efforts to slash federal funding and deploy “military personnel” to city streets, were “unprecedented” and unlawful.

“Boston will never back down from being a beacon of freedom and a home for everyone.”

Expect that sound bite to pop up on pro-Wu ads.

But our mayor isn’t alone in using the Trump Administration for campaign fuel. New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, seen by many as a contender for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2028, has been mining Trump’s moves for months.

Her Fighting Oligarchy tour with Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders was akin to a pre-campaign multi-state swing. AOC’s also blasted Medicaid cuts, Trump’s calling the National Guard to D.C., and his order to attack Iran. That last one, she concluded, should prompt his ouster.

“The President’s disastrous decision to bomb Iran without authorization is a grave violation of the Constitution and Congressional War Powers. He has impulsively risked launching a war that may ensnare us for generations. It is absolutely and clearly grounds for impeachment,” AOC posted on X in June.

One thing she’s not so big on: problems in her own district.

As the New York Post reported, residents of her congressional district slammed AOC for ignoring a crime-plagued strip in Queens, infamous for rampant prostitution and illegal street vendors — fueled in part by gangs that got a foothold in the area due to the city’s migrant crisis.

“We need our congresswoman’s help to stop crime, drugs, gangs, sex trafficking. I would love for her to address these issues,” said Rosa Sanchez, head of the Restore Roosevelt Avenue Coalition.

And Boston residents would love to know how much the White Stadium overhaul will finally cost before the election, and how a sex offender was hired by the city.

But like other progressive pols around the country, Wu has found Trump to be the campaign gift that keeps giving.
