Linda Hamilton battles a different kind of baddie in ‘Osiris’
It may be 40+ years since “The Terminator” but Linda Hamilton remains primed for kick-butt alien invasion sci-fi with “Osiris,” now streaming.
“What I love is a good script or a fun time. Or a different time,” Hamilton, 68, explained in a phone interview. “What I mean is, I love a different character. Sometimes, even if it’s not a great script and my part isn’t that interesting, I still want to contribute to that movie.”
“Osiris” – the title’s a reference to the Egyptian God of Death – is set on a spaceship where monstrous aliens capture and dine on humans.
Hamilton’s Anya, a Russian survivor of 30 years in space with these horrible monsters, has a daughter. They both become key to keeping the troop alive.
“This was a real quick turnaround between the offer and time to show up and shoot. Because I actually replaced another actor who had a medical issue. So it came to me and I had maybe 10 days to get ready.
“I just thought, Why not? I mean, I had to scamper. I spent hours and hours with a vocal coach, a dialect coach. I hadn’t played Russian for 35 years or something – I thought there would be some muscle memory in the mouth. But, you know, 30 some years have come and gone, so I was in over my head.
“My character really does a lot of exposition. I think I probably have more lines than everyone else in the movie. And I love that. I love jumping into something that’s really scary.”
Does she see “Osiris” as a homage or unofficial sequel of sorts to “Aliens,” which was directed by her “Terminator” director (and ex-husband) James Cameron?
“No, not really.”
With Sarah Connor in “Terminator” her most iconic role, does she see shades of Sarah in roles that come her way?
“People do come to me for a certain ferociousness that lends itself well to playing those women. Although I’ve told my agent that I don’t want to be a tough guy anymore. I feel like I’ve done it to death. So ‘If it ain’t cuddly, don’t bring it to me’ is what I told them.
“It was more than two years ago now, when I told my agent I was retiring. I said, ‘Dude, I don’t know if I can do this anymore. My hip has been bothering me so badly and I’m tired of toughing it out.’
“Then he called me: ‘Stranger Things’ asked if I was available from June to June. I said, Yes! It was stunningly exciting for me, because I’m a fan of the show.”
