Kristian Campbell confirms he and Red Sox are engaged in contract talks

ARLINGTON, Texas — Shortly after Kristian Campbell hit his first MLB home run in the best all-around game of his career so far, reports emerged that he and the Red Sox were deep in talks regarding a contract extension.

Following the game Campbell confirmed that discussions, first reported by MassLive’s Chris Cotillo, are taking place.

“They’re talking back and forth, I know that for a fact,” Campbell said. “I’m not sure how close or not close it is but we have some communication on that for sure.”

Campbell will be under team control for six seasons absent a deal and would be eligible for free agency following the 2030 season. A new contract would ensure Campbell remains in Boston beyond that point while also setting the rookie up for a significant payday.

Asked if he’d be interested in having long-term security with the Red Sox, Campbell said he’s open to the idea.

“I leave that to my agents and let them talk back and forth and work out what’s going to be done, and we’ll listen for sure,” Campbell said.

The first weekend of his major league career has already been a memorable one for Campbell. After making the Opening Day roster out of spring training the 22-year-old rookie has gone 5 for 10 with a home run, two walks and a .583 on-base percentage through his first three games. He’s played solid defense at both second base and left field and nearly came up with a highlight-reel diving catch in the outfield that would have ranked among the best in recent Red Sox history had the ball not popped out of his glove after hitting the ground.
