Kevin Bacon says hell yeah to ‘The Bondsman’
Gory, violent and funny, with an irresistible musical twang, “The Bondsman” casts Kevin Bacon as dead bounty hunter Hub Halloran, brought back by nothing less than the Devil.
How did Bacon, 66, decide to inhabit the mind and body of this demon hunter?
“It really always goes back to the character I have to be. Is this something new and fresh and interesting? What’s going on with this guy that I want to explore?”
“The Bondsman,” which streams all 8 half-hour episodes Thursday on Prime Video, is, he acknowledged, “A crazy combination of things. It’s gory. Definitely has a sense of humor. But also, this very strong sense of family.
“I was struck with the fact that there’s all these crazy things that are happening outside of this family. But the family dynamic stays the same.
“Hub is kind of a man/child in that he wasn’t able to make this relationship work, that he broke up his marriage, broke up the band and has a difficult relationship with his son.
“For a man of my age he’s maybe too close to be living in his mother’s garage. He hasn’t really grown up.
“That’s such a nice juxtaposition with the fact that he’s just an ass kicker. A badass willing to throw himself into any kind of a tussle. Even if it’s with a demon!
“So this was just unusual. I don’t pretend that the show is not out there. It definitely is.”
Along with acting, Bacon has always had a parallel music-making career with his older brother Michael Bacon.
“I’ve avoided combining my musical life and my acting life,” he said. “I’ve never wanted to shoehorn this into films because I think it cheapens both the idea of music and the idea of my acting career. But in this case, it seemed a very cool part of the story.
“Grainger David who created the show is a very big fan of country music specifically. So the idea came up we were going to need original songs, songs that Hub and Maryanne, my ex-wife, had written and performed when they were a duo in the past and have since broken up.
“People suggested I could write some songs for the show and I was really into the idea.
“Serendipitously, Jennifer Nettles, who was the perfect person to play Maryanne, got cast. She also happened to be a great singer and a great songwriter. So Jen and I started writing songs before we even started shooting. Two are in the show and there’s, a third one she wrote by herself.
“That’s been a fun musical component. Really creatively satisfying to step into that.” While chasing demons.
