Red Sox injury updates: Brayan Bello to make two starts for WooSox
ARLINGTON, Texas — Red Sox manager Alex Cora provided an encouraging update on right-hander Brayan Bello (right shoulder strain), who he said threw in Fort Myers on Thursday and looked really good.
Now the plan is for the right-hander to make two starts with the Worcester Red Sox during their upcoming series in Jacksonville.
“Bello threw the ball really well yesterday,” Cora said. “He’ll start in Jacksonville on Tuesday. He’s got Tuesday and Sunday.”
Lucas Giolito (left hamstring strain) was also scheduled to throw on Friday, and while Cora had not received a report on his outing prior to Friday’s game, he said Giolito has also been trending in the right direction.
Barring any setbacks, both pitchers could conceivably rejoin the Red Sox rotation by mid-April.
Kutter Crawford (right patellar tendinopathy) remains further behind the other starters but has continued throwing bullpens as he ramps up for the season. Cora said Crawford is still in Fort Myers but will rejoin the MLB club in Boston when the team returns for the first home series of the year.
WooSox drop opener
The Worcester Red Sox opened their season on Friday with a 4-3 loss to the Syracuse Mets. Abraham Toro hit a solo home run and drove in another run on an RBI groundout, Roman Anthony had an RBI groundout as well, and Marcelo Mayer went 0 for 4 in his Triple-A debut.
Robert Stock got the start for the WooSox and threw four scoreless innings, allowing two hits and a walk while striking out six. Josh Winckowski gave up two runs over three innings while striking out five, and Isaiah Campbell gave up two runs in one inning to take the loss.
Extra innings
The Worcester Red Sox announced that left-hander Matt Moore will start the season on the 7-day IL. Moore, a 13-year big league veteran and a one-time All-Star, did not make the Opening Day roster but could potentially provide additional depth. According to MassLive’s Christopher Smith, Moore is dealing with arm soreness. … The Red Sox traded right-hander Noah Davis to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Thursday in exchange for cash considerations. Davis was a non-roster invitee who did not make the team out of camp. … Backup catcher Carlos Narvaez will make his Red Sox debut on Saturday, Cora said.
