NCAA hockey: BU scores five third-period goals to romp past Ohio State, 8-3
It’s a good thing college hockey games don’t end after one period.
Boston University, coming off a disappointing three-goal loss to UConn in a Hockey East semifinal, was outshot 15-2 and outscored 1-0 by Ohio State in the opening game of the NCAA Tournament on Thursday in Toledo, Ohio.
But then everything the Terriers (22-13-2) fired on net seemed to go in during an 8-3 rout of the Buckeyes.
BU will play the winner of Michigan State-Cornell, who followed the Terriers onto the ice at the Huntington Center. If BU wins Friday, then Burlington native Jay Pandolfo will have led his team to the Frozen Four in all three of his seasons behind the bench.
Freshman defenseman Cole Hutson scored into an empty net with 30.9 seconds left to cap a one-goal, three-assist afternoon. Fellow rookie Cole Eiserman pocketed two goals and Jack Hughes added a goal and two assists.
Tied 3-3 entering the third, the Terriers scored on five of their eight shots on net against beleaguered Ohio State goalie Logan Terness.
A total of 12 Terriers recorded at least one point, and also notching goals were Aiden Celebrini, Quinn Hutson, Matt Copponi and Jack Harvey. Penalties have hurt the Terriers at times this season and they were whistled for six more infractions, but held Ohio State to 1-for-6 with the man advantage.
Joe Dunlap collected two of Ohio State’s goals. The Buckeyes led 3-2 late in the second period when Copponi tied it.
It was a great start to the tournament for Hockey East, which sent six teams to the 16-team tournament, by far the most of any league.
UMass is set to face Minnesota in the Fargo Regional at 8:30 p.m.
