Jonathan Roumie found his calling in ‘The Chosen’

Jonathan Roumie has found his career-defining role as Jesus in the multi-part Biblical epic “The Chosen” – a global hit – and it’s all due to letting God take charge.

“From a career standpoint I always kept my faith and work separate. Then I got to the point where there was no work,” Roumie, 50, explained in a global virtual press conference.

“I realized having that separation had harmed me. In an act of desperation seven years ago I had a surrender moment and said, ‘God, you have to take over. God, if you want me to use these gifts I’m given, I’ll leave it up to you.’

“At that moment I was broke, sitting in a car for Uber. Hours would go without a single call. I came back to my apartment and there were four checks in my mailbox! I had this windfall.

“That for me was the thing that was unlocked now that I’ve given over my life to God. Three months later Dallas Jenkins” – “The Chosen” creator-director-co-writer and producer – “called. I had worked with him on these short films. He said, ‘We’re going four episodes of a crowdfunded show and it probably won’t be beyond that but it’s a check.’

“Now it’s a global smash and we’ve begun our 6th season.”

His biggest challenge?

“Getting cast! The overall thing I have to remind myself of now is the magnitude of the role. Every season that’s not lost on me. This will be the most challenging role I’ll ever play – how do you play God and man in one person?

“Every encounter, whether it’s with the public or at events is a surprise on some level for me. Sometimes they’re pretty intense, pretty wild. People asking me to pray for them, baptize their children. I’ve been asked to marry couples.”

With celebrity comes typecasting. Can Roumie, a New York City native, play anyone other than the Christ?

“If I didn’t work after the show but found some means of my mission to serve, I’ll be at peace with it. I hope I have opportunities with different characters.

“That said I have a rom-com coming out opposite Kevin James who is so funny. He gave me the opportunity to play a guy who’s clean shaven and maybe ADD.

“I did a movie ‘Jesus Revolution,’ playing this fiery preacher character who had essences of Jesus but was the furthest thing from Jesus as a human. The people who cast me didn’t know I was also Jesus in ‘The Chosen.’  So hopefully the truth of my own humanity will be the thing that people see rather than any casting limitation.”

“The Chosen: Last Supper” opens Friday

(During a four-week run in the U.S. and Canada, all episodes of “The Chosen: Last Supper” will be released in three parts in theaters.)
