Battenfeld: Boston’s Mayor Michelle Wu climbs over other liberals as new face of Trump resistance
Michelle Wu has climbed over Maura Healey, Elizabeth Warren and other liberals to become the new leader of the Trump resistance here in Massachusetts and across the nation.
The Boston mayor is now the face of fighting back against President Trump and his policies, a role everyone else wants but nobody else has been able to seize yet.
Healey is a distant second and Warren is one of the progressive also-rans when it comes to standing up against the Trump administration.
Even White House and Justice Department officials have noticed, targeting Wu regularly and cementing her place as the number one threat to the administration’s political messaging.
But the notoriety comes with consequences, as the feds are moving in on Boston and Massachusetts to nab illegal immigrant criminals and threatening to cut federal funding on education and other programs.
While Wu’s star may be rising, it comes with pain for Boston residents.
“I made a promise at CPAC that I was going to Boston after reading about numerous illegal alien child rapists walking the streets of Boston and Massachusetts,” border czar Tom Homan wrote on Monday. “ICE had to find and arrest these illegal alien rapists because Massachusetts and Boston are sanctuaries that refuse to cooperate with ICE. They would rather release these animals back into the community rather than honor ICE detainers or notify ICE when they are scheduled to be released. Mayor Wu later testified that I was lying. Well, I traveled to Boston last Tuesday, as promised, and we kicked off a five-day operation with ICE, FBI, ATF, DEA, US Marshals and DSS. These incredible men and women arrested a total of 370 illegal aliens in Boston and surrounding areas. A majority of the 370 illegal aliens in Boston and surrounding areas.”
“I’d like to extend my condolences to the good people of Boston,” Attorney General Pam Bondi wrote earlier this month. “Mayor Wu’s actions are callous and an insult to law enforcement across America. As a result of the mayor’s decision to side with public safety threats over law-abiding citizens, DOJ will have no choice but to increase efforts in the city of Boston.”
Immigration isn’t the only area Trump officials are targeting. The Republican president’s efforts to dismantle the Department of Education could result in Boston losing $100 million in federal funding, according to local officials.
That could leave Wu scrambling to fill what is about 6% of the school system’s budget.
But Wu is now positioned to claim that Trump’s actions are retaliatory, allowing her to seize high ground in the high-stakes showdown.
Wu has left Warren in the dust as the number one Trump target. The Massachusetts senator has been powerless to stop Trump’s actions in the Senate and is not a threat. She is more of a punching bag to Trump.
Healey is the number two liberal in Massachusetts behind Wu, but has been more concerned with the migrant crisis and budget deficits than fighting back against the administration.
Rep. Ayanna Pressley – once thought to be a progressive leader in the country as one of the “Squad” – has been marginalized as an extremist.
The rest of the Democrats, even nationally like Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, are well behind Wu when it comes to being the face of the resistance.
Wu has refused to compromise with the Trump administration, showing herself to be a strong opponent who won’t back down.
This is somewhat of a transformation for her. Wu was seen as timid at the beginning of the migrant crisis, staying in the background while Healey seized a Roxbury community rec center as a migrant shelter.
Now her political consultants are telling her to fight and defend the city – as evidenced in her feisty State of the City address, which drew the attention of the White House and catapulted her to the national stage. Could national office be in her future?
