Hockey All-Stars: Foes become friends in send-off games
WORCESTER – The North proved to be superior at the 2025 Massachusetts State Hockey Coaches Association Senior All-Star Games as the girls defeated the South 4-0 and the boys won 6-3.
The game featured several of the top names from the 2024-25 MIAA High School ice hockey season. This included several players who reached TD Garden the week before for state championship games but also many who have had a bit of a break from their high school action.
The girl’s game featured a scoreless first period as neither team generated many offensive chances. Heading into the second period, the North side knew they needed to step up.
“After the first period we started to communicate more,” Andover’s Grace Johnson said. “We are all new so it was hard playing with each other in the first period but we picked it up in the end.”
Ava Buckley of the Peabody, Lynnfield and North Reading co-op program scored the opening goal and said that playing with girls she had previously competed against was a unique opportunity to learn.
“We were all super amped up,” Buckley said. “You learn from each other, I am friends with a lot of those girls, and we are all good in our own ways. Finally getting to play together helped us all put that together.”
Minutes later, Johnson found the back of the net on a two-on-one and that was the extent of the scoring in the second period.
Belmont’s Sadie Taylor found the back of the net in the early third period and Andover’s Nora Hurley rounded out the scoring towards the end of the period to give the North a victory. Hurley admitted that it was bittersweet as it also signaled the end of her high school career.
“It was definitely sad to undo those laces,” Hurley said. “Ultimately, when we first put on those laces we didn’t realize we would end it with such great friendships and capped off the dedication we put into hockey.”
The boys game featured some early physicality and also some former foes turned teammates. Canton’s Travis Thomas and Billerica’s Danny Viscione and Nolan Dawson had just faced off in the Division 2 championship a week prior. Billerica won the matchup 3-2 in overtime and Taylor said the hard feelings were gone.
“They’re good guys overall,” Thomas said. “Maybe not so good when we are on opposing sides on the ice but yeah, very good people.”
These good feelings propelled the North to a big victory as the three of them accounted for five of the team’s six goals. However, it was the South that got the scoring started when Xaverian’s Jackson Morse finished a pass from Xaverian teammate Devin Gosciak for the final tally of their high school careers.
Minutes later, a nifty passing play between Viscione and St. John’s Shrewsbury’s Daniel Menyalkin tied the game. In the second period, Thomas scored two quick ones to give the North a 3-1 lead.
Seamus Tattan of Catholic Memorial cut the deficit to 3-2 but Viscione netted his second minutes later to re-establish the two-goal lead.
“It was fun, getting to meet guys I hadn’t met before,” Viscione said. “It was definitely cool getting to know those guys.”
Dawson scored a few minutes later to make it 5-2 for the North and said the team was really gelling at this point in the game.
“We had a great group,” Dawson said. “Good balance, great goalies in the net, was definitely fun.”
Marblehead’s Kyle Hart and Archbishop Williams Finn Kelly added the final goals to give the game its 6-3 score and send all of the players home with one last high school hockey memory.
“Playing with all of these great players was awesome,” Thomas said. “The passing was there, and the goal-scoring was there. It was a great time.”
