Boston weather: More snow possible as temperatures dip in coming week

The Boston region may see some light snow in the coming week as temperatures dip once more, according to National Weather Service forecasts.

“We’ve got little storm system coming in (Monday) morning,” said National Weather Service meteorologist Andy Nash. “So we’ll have some rain to begin with – well, there may be a brief snowflake or two right around daybreak, but generally, rain (Monday), damp and dreary and chilly from one storm system. That clears out by late in the day Monday.”

The Boston area is expected to see it’s first chance of snow this spring before 10 a.m. Monday morning. Little or no snow accumulation is expected, forecasts predict, as the area gets rain throughout the day.

The high Monday is expected to hit 42 degrees, NWS forecasts, with patchy fog in the morning and wind gust up to 23 miles per hour during the day.

The second chance of snow is forecasted to return Wednesday, NWS shows. Chances of precipitation are lower Wednesday, with the possibility of snow before 8 a.m. and a chance of rain continuing later into the day, according to forecasts. The high is expected to reach a warmer 48 degrees, NWS reports.

“For Tuesday and Wednesday, there’s no big weather maker for us, but we’re kind of stuck in a cool and maybe more clouds and sun pattern,” said Nash. “But generally dry. And then temperatures start to moderate as we get toward the end of the week, and still dry.”

Highs are expected to remain in the upper 40s to low 50s throughout the week, NWS forecasts, with lows ranging in the 30s.

“Temperatures will be maybe a touch below normal for a good part of the week, but it’s not a very cold pattern,” Nash said. “So normally, this time of the year, we should be up around 50 most days, and we’ll be somewhere in that range.”

The snow is also a “very normal situation,” around Boston and Massachusetts in March, Nash said “especially you go farther inland and higher elevation.” The region often sees snow as late as April, he added.

The region is also headed into fire weather season as spring comes in, Nash said. A NWS fire weather advisory was issued Sunday, though the rain Monday is expected to alleviate the risk.

“From later in March through April and into early May, is typically fire season, or brush fire season,” Nash said. “Just this time of the year, we have all those dead leaves from last fall on the ground. The grass still is mostly brown. If we have a couple of days that are just a lot of sun and dry air, than those leaves dry out real quick.”

“If somebody was trying to do a burn pile, or put a cigarette out, it could catch very quickly, and if you’ve got wind on top of that, it can spread,” Nash added.

The NWS fire advisories recommend people “exercise caution” handling potential ignition sources, like machinery, cigarettes, and matches.
