BMW is Surprised by M5 Touring Demand as Production Balances with Sedan

BMW underestimated just how popular the M5 Touring would be in the U.S. market. For the first time ever, the high-performance wagon is available stateside, and demand is already exceeding expectations. According to Sylvia Neubauer, BMW’s Vice President of Customer, Brand, and Sales, the company initially projected that two-thirds of M5 production would be sedans and only one-third wagons. However, the reality is that production is now split evenly between the two body styles.

Neubauer recently told BMW Blog that not only has interest in the M5 Touring surged past expectations, but demand for the sedan has also been higher than anticipated. As a result, BMW has had to ramp up production for both variants. “We now see that there’s more demand for the sedan,” Neubauer explained. “So we’ve increased production there. But there’s even more demand for the Touring. So the increase on the Touring is much higher.”

The 2025 BMW M5 Touring made its debut last August, packing a 717-horsepower hybrid V8 under the hood—just like its sedan counterpart. This powertrain also cranks out 738 lb-ft of torque, allowing the hefty 5,530-pound wagon to rocket from 0-60 mph in just 3.5 seconds. Additionally, thanks to its hybrid system, the M5 Touring can travel up to 25 miles on electric power alone.

While the M5 Touring’s strong sales performance is an encouraging sign for BMW’s long-roof enthusiasts, it doesn’t necessarily guarantee that the highly coveted M3 Touring will make its way to the U.S. anytime soon. However, there is hope. Andreas Meyer, BMW’s VP of Product, stated last year that if the M5 Touring proves successful, there’s a possibility that the next-generation M3 Touring could be considered for the American market.

For now, the overwhelming demand for the M5 Touring is a clear signal that American buyers are eager for high-performance wagons. If BMW takes note, we could see even more exciting Touring models arriving in the future.
