Somerset Berkley completes revenge tour, knocks off third-time defending Div. 2 champ Malden Catholic
LOWELL — Somerset Berkley yearned all season for a shot at revenge. Once it came, the Blue Raiders took full advantage.
Dom Taylor tallied 17 points, eight rebounds, and four assists while Finn Bjork added 10 points and 16 rebounds as No. 6 Somerset Berkley rolled to the Division 2 state title with a 65-44 win over three-time defending champion No. 1 Malden Catholic on Sunday night at the Tsongas Center in Lowell.
The Blue Raiders dominated wire-to-wire, leading by as many as 19 points in the first half before building a 25-point advantage after three quarters.
A year ago the Raiders fell to Malden Catholic in the semifinals when a last-ditch three-point shot fell short. This time around, with six key pieces back from that team, the Blue Raiders left little doubt overcoming a Lancer team that was seemingly unbeatable in the postseason. Over the last four years, the Lancers were 19-0 in the tournament and had won each of their three state title games by over 20 points.
“We lost to Malden Catholic last year so there was a big push to get them in this game,” Somerset Berkley coach Bob Slater said. “We wanted them bad. It’s great for our program. It’s great for our town. It’s great for our school. What a great ride.”
Somerset Berkley (24-1) was unfazed. For most of the year the Blue Raiders dominated the competition scoring over 70 points in 16 of their last 18 games. That confidence was on full display. The Raiders jumped to a 14-6 lead after one behind seven points from Brendan McDonald. In the second, the Raiders started to pull away. Colten Pacheco hit a three-pointer, Taylor splashed consecutive triples and Max Finlaw went coast-to-coast to stretch the lead to 19 points.
At the other end, the Raiders smothered Boston Herald Dream Teamer Matthew Gaffney with a diamond-and-one. Guarded by Taylor and Alex Crook, Gaffney did not score until there was 4:53 remaining in the third quarter.
“We know how good we are. We think we’re the best team in the state,” Bjork said. “We came into the game thinking we were going to win.”
Ahead by 14 points at the half, Somerset put the game away in the third. Pacheco hit a corner triple and Bjork scored off a flex cut. Then as the seconds ticked down, Taylor came flying in off a McDonald miss and tipped it home as the buzzer sounded to give Somerset a 54-29 advantage after three.
“We had house money,” McDonald said. “Everyone assumed, ‘Oh Malden Catholic is going for the four-peat.’ We came out and had no fear.”
