Somerset Berkley boys rally past Masconomet to make D2 final
Somerset Berkley is on the doorstep of its dream.
Finn Bjork totaled 16 points and 12 rebounds wile Dom Taylor poured in 18 points as No. 6 Somerset Berkley advanced to the Division 2 State title game with a 66-58 win over No. 7 Masconomet on Monday night at the Clark Athletic Center Gymnasium on the campus of UMass Boston.
The Blue Raiders (23-1) overcame a 14-point halftime deficit.
“This is beyond belief,” Somerset Berkley coach Bob Slater said. “I never thought five years ago we would be here. The kids we have are fantastic. They make it so easy to coach. We as a coaching staff are just so thrilled for them.”
A season ago in the semifinal the Blue Raiders fell to eventual championship Malden Catholic by two points. This time the Blue Raiders did not let the opportunity get away. The trio of Bjork, Taylor, and Brendan McDonald (13 points) to go with Max Finlaw harassed Masconomet (21-2) throughout the second half. The group was the catalyst for defensive pressure that limited the Chieftains to just 26 points over the final two quarters.
“We had more energy in the second half,” Slater said. “We wanted to get into their drives and force them to the outside. Offensively, we were going lateral and too much east-west instead of north-south. We started attacking and being the aggressor.”
Trailing 32-18 at the break, Somerset Berkley forced nine Masconomet 3rd-quarter turnovers that led to 13 points. After a Bjork put-back capped a 16-4 run to even the score at 36, Taylor and McDonald both finished through traffic to put Somerset on top 44-39.
In the fourth, Somerset Berkley grabbed a five-point edge with 5:09 left when McDonald drilled a triple and then moments later found a cutting Taylor. Trailing by three the Chieftains grew even when Thomas Denton drilled a trey but the Blue Raiders answered when Taylor connected on a triple of his own. Taylor continued to assert his will as the game wore on as the senior splashed a second shot from beyond the arc before finishing with a reverse layup to stretch the lead to 59-53 with 1:50 to play.
Jimmy Farrell (15 points) tried to keep the Chieftains within range as he buried a three-pointer, but the Blue Raiders went five-of-six from the free throw line down the stretch to seal the win.
The Chieftains built its first-half edge to 10 points in the middle of the second quarter on the heels of Farrell who scored 12 points in the first 16 minutes. As the half wound down, Cal Weidman hit a three-pointer to give Masconomet its largest lead of the game at 32-18.
