Stone’s 2OT winner lifts Milton girls into final

BOURNE – When her team needed her most, Milton’s Sabrina Stone showed up.

The junior scored the equalizer late in the third period and the winner 45 seconds into the second overtime to give Milton a 2-1 victory over Marshfield and secure a spot in the Division 2 MIAA Girls Hockey State Championship.

“It was a really good overall team effort,” Stone said. “To come back and win so late in the period, it was such a great game.”

The Rams controlled the pace for much of the first period and also got on the board first. This came when senior Cassie Burke sped down the side boards and fired an off-angle shot that found the top corner.

The second period featured excellent play from both goaltenders, with Marshfield’s Morgan Murphy making several second chance saves.

Entering the final period, Stone said her team had a shared mentality.

“We knew what had to be done when we entered the locker room between the second and third period,” Stone said. “We got it done.”

The Wildcats came out on fire and continuously peppered Murphy with high-quality shots. This eventually led to Stone’s top-corner goal that kept the season alive.

“She’s a very good goalie,” Stone said of Murphy. “I just knew I had to throw it on net.”

The horn signaled the end of regulation and the Wildcats had a chance to clinch a trip to the Garden. Head coach Matt Lodi said the team’s experience of being the “comeback cats” had them prepared for the moment.

“We know how to win in overtime,” Lodi said. “Since the overtime has been instituted, fortunately, we have never lost. We have tied a few times, won an overtime against Pembroke last year. We have been there before and they buy into the mentality.”

The first overtime featured some chances for each side but both goalies were up to the challenge. Milton goalie Caera Hart said she knew her team would stay in the hunt.

“I believed we could do it,” Hart said. “We are a strong team, I felt that we were going to be able to get it done.”

Milton will now face Medfield as both programs seek their first championship.

“It’s super exciting, the team is just incredible,” Lodi said. “They have come back from the depths of despair so many times and I am super proud of the grit, the tenacity and the will to win.”
