High school boys swimming and diving: State meet preview
The boys high school state swimming and diving meet takes place this weekend on the University of Minnesota campus. While the diving kicked off Thursday, the swimming gets underway with preliminaries on Friday, with the finals for both swimming and diving slated for Saturday.
Class A competition begins each day at 12 p.m., with Class 2A following at 6 p.m.
King of the dive
Rosemount’s Lucas Gerten aims to cap his illustrious high school career with a fourth Class 2A state diving crown.
The senior broke the state meet record last year when he posted a 539.6 to win his third title, and hasn’t showed any signs of slowing down. Gerten’s section-winning score last week was 639.65.
STA’s day
Forever a Class A swimming and diving power, St. Thomas Academy is well positioned for further success this weekend. The Cadets sport the top-seeded time in the 200-yard medley relay and should contend in the 200 freestyle relay, as well.
Cadets junior Luke Mechtel is the favorite in the 50 freestyle, while senior Dane Dow is the man to beat in the 500 freestyle.
Kogler’s time?
A year ago, Stillwater’s Jackson Kogler logged a pair of top-four finishes at state — finishing fourth in the individual medley and second in the backstroke. It could be the senior’s time to take his place atop the podium.
Seed times suggest Kogler is a heavy favorite in the 200 individual medley this weekend, but don’t discount him in the 100 backstroke, either.
