Division 4 state track: Lamar twins lift Pembroke to first title in 10 years

As Gabe Lamar passed his twin brother Luke during a race Saturday, the seniors didn’t stress about bragging rights.

Like so many times before, both athletes were able to succeed in their ultimate endeavors. Gabe captured the boys’ 300-meter run (35.05) with Luke placing second (35.64). Meanwhile, the duo combined with Jayden Leonard and Kyle Tracy for a victory in the 4×200 relay (1:31.17), as Pembroke captured the Div. 4 boys indoor track and field championship at the Reggie Lewis Center.

“It’s just an absolutely surreal feeling,” said Gabe. “Everyday, we were focusing on the process, not the outcome. Went to practice when we woke up on Saturdays at 7 o’clock in the morning. We’re out, we’re doing workouts, we’re lifting. When other teams are off, we’re out working. It means so much to me, because we’ve come up short in the past few years, but now this year? In 2025, my senior year, my last indoor state meet ever? It just feels amazing.”

It was the first title for Pembroke since 2015. The Titans paced all schools with 74 team points, with Leonard also finishing a double-winner. In addition to his performance during Pembroke’s victorious 4×200 relay, the senior also placed first in the boys’ 55-meter dash at 6.57 seconds. Casey Motta finished second overall in the 1000-meter run for the Titans (2:41.71).

“The group of seniors that we have this year has been really outstanding,” said Pembroke co-coach James Rooney. “For four years, we knew when they were sophomores, that when they were seniors that they were going to be really good. We just missed last year, and we knew that we brought a lot of people back this year.”

Meanwhile, senior Maggie Kuchman made history by finishing a double-winner with first place finishes in the 1000 (3:02.25) and the mile (5:09.46). In doing so, the Amherst College commit lifted Holliston to its second straight Div. 4 girls indoor track and field crown in front of a packed house.

“These teams don’t come around very often,” said Holliston girls track coach Jennifer Moreau. “To do it twice? We actually have three titles in four years, and it’s remarkable.”

The Panthers were able to prevent Pembroke from a clean sweep of both team championships, nipping the Titans for the girls crown by just nine points in the school standings with 69 overall. Senior Kaitlyn Quealy aided Holliston with a win in the 300 at 41.45 seconds.

“Looking back, I’m proud of what our team has done,” Kuchman said. “(Especially) with the hard work we put in. I’m really excited for the next four years.”

Senior Logan Walsh propelled Ludlow’s boys track team to a runner-up finish individually, and looked like the meet’s MVP in doing so. He finished a triple-winner by placing first in the boys 1000 (2:41.06) and the mile (4:24.73), respectively. Then, the senior teamed up with Eli Lipson, Lucas Franco and Joshua Moret for a third victory in the 4×800 (8:27.92).

The UMass (Amherst) commit entered the Reggie Lewis Center with hope, still making his return from a broken foot. Safe to say, Walsh appears to be back.

“This season, I’ve done what I needed to do to just get back in shape,” Walsh said. “I just wanted to get back out here, have a good opening to this ‘postseason’ start.”
