School district levy to drop slightly in 2013

Hutchinson Public Schools’ annual Truth in Taxation hearing Monday night drew no comments from the public, as district staff noted the total amount of local taxes collected next year would drop slightly from 2012.

District Director of Business and Finance Donna Luhring noted the payable 2013 levy would decline by $33,390 – a 0.69-percent decrease – for a total of $4.8 million.

Local tax dollars, Luhring noted, constitute 15.5 percent of the district’s revenue. State aid makes up about 53.6 percent of revenue. Federal money comprises a significant portion of the remaining third of revenue.

Luhring said the district’s total expenditures of $32.49 million for the 2012-13 school year – according to preliminary calculations – mark a 1.49 percent drop from last year.

Expected 2012-13 general fund expenditures of $26.6 million – which do not include transportation or capital spending – mostly go to employee salaries and benefits.
