Litchfield holds off Rockford to win subsection opener
Freshman Laney Huhner scored just two points, but they were Litchfield’s final points in a 53-50 win over Rockford in the Section 5AA South Subsection quarterfinal game Thursday at Litchfield High School.
The Dragons, seeded fourth in the subsection, will play top-seeded Annandale in the semifinals at 1 p.m. Saturday at St. Michael-Albertville High School.
Huhner grabbed a rebound of a Rockford miss with about 15 seconds to play and Litchfield leading by one point, then was fouled as she tried to dribble out of traffic. She calmly hit two free throws to push the Dragons’ lead to three with 10.2 seconds remaining. Rockford missed a desperation three-pointer as Litchfield survived to play another day.
Litchfield built a 33-22 halftime lead, but was outscored 14-2 in the first seven minutes of the second half as Rockford took a 36-35 lead. The game stayed close the rest of the way.
Macy Huhner led Litchfield with 20 points, and Kyndra Beavers had 10.
