Bernice Sapp has resigned as school playground supervisor.

Airman Timothy A. Gustafson, son of Larry O. and Peggy J. Gustafson of Route 8, has graduated from Air Force basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas.

Friends and relatives of Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Lovell gathered recently to help celebrate the Lovell’s 60th wedding anniversary.

A girl was born today to Mr. and Mrs. Donald Peterson.

Lloyd H. Nelson, locomotive engineer, retired last week after 27 years of continuous service to Minnesota, Dakota and Western Railway. His 65th birthday was Aug. 15.

50 YEARS AGO

Beverly Joan Lemke was honored at a bridal shower Aug. 23 in the First Lutheran Church parlors. Game prizes were awarded Joan Vold, Mrs. Donald Anderson, Mrs. Lynn Belanger and Mrs. Alfie Belanger.

Ten members of the Earl Clauson family, 1030 Eighth St., recently completed a 1,200-mile trip which took them on the circle tour of Lake Superior. They traveled with a house trailer and a camping trailer.

City recreation ball champions for the first grade are the Red Sox. They are: Neil Olson, John LaRue, Jerry Jensen, John Holler, Paul Green, Richard LaRue, Anthony Holler and Jim Knapp.

Second grade champions are called the “Cubs.” They are: Wayne Carrier, Ronald Bernard, Jeffrey Bishop, Richard Springsteel, Danny Ysen, Larry Hanson, Bradley Jensen, Brian Jackson and Greg Olson.

60 YEARS AGO

Friends and co-workers from the court house entertained at a stork shower honoring Mrs. Robert Hodel, Island View Route, at the home of Mrs. Martha Cole, 1103 Eighth St.

A daughter was born today at Falls Memorial Hospital to Mr. and Mrs. Marne Winkler, 413 Main Ave., weight, 6 pounds, 5 ounces.

Clarence Polus, now fighting in Korea, has been promoted to the rank of sergeant according to an Army release from the First Cavalry Division in Korea. His wife, June, resides in Ranier.

Med Darval, proprietor of D & H Inc., 301 Fourth St., today announced that his firm has taken over the sale and distribution of Skelly oils and gases.

70 YEARS AGO

At a quiet ceremony at Zion Lutheran Church Sunday at 11 a.m., Miss Genevieve June Readman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R.E. Readman of Fort Frances, became the bride of Carlton Gedney, son of Mrs. George Gedney, of this city.

Mr. and Mrs. Ora Hazen, Jameson Addition, returned Monday night from Bricelyn after a trip there with her daughter, Madonna, who is to teach business in the high school there.

Mr. and Mrs. B.J. Thiele, Third Avenue, returned Monday from a vacation trip to points in Minnesota and Wisconsin.

John Freed, former Koochiching County rural teacher who for the last several years has taught at Oak Island, Northwest Angle, visited friends in the city today.
