Bishop Feehan rallies past Dartmouth despite Kat Cheesebro’s record-setting game

DARTMOUTH – In a wire-to-wire finish, Bishop Feehan used its tough-game experience to make it 22 straight in-state girls basketball wins to spoil Dartmouth’s Kat Cheesebro’s record-setting night.

With a late 16-6 run thanks to some great defense, the Shamrocks put away the Indians 58-55 in a nonleague matchup on the road Tuesday.

“The kids really barred down,” said Bishop Feehan coach Amy Dolores. “We switched (Samantha) Carlson onto Cheesebro and she just did an incredible job.”

Dartmouth had four chances over the final 30 seconds to either take the lead or tie the contest, but was unable to get the job done.

Cheesebro, a senior captain, finished with 34 points and now holds the program record with 1,855.

“The thing about (Cheesebro) is she is going to leave here disappointed,” said Indians’ coach Brian Jalbert about the loss. “Maybe at one point she will think about that record.”

It was a huge night for junior Mollie Mullins, who netted 11 of her 16 points in the first half and six of 13 points for junior Shannon LaMorticelli in the fourth to help bring Bishop Feehan (16-1) back from a seven-point hole.

“Mollie was great,” said Dolores. “She’s really stepped up for us since Charlotte (Adams-Lopez) has been out. I just can’t say enough good things about the toughness that all the kids show.”

In the third, Dartmouth (13-2) seemed to grab control of the contest with a lead up to 42-34 after three as sophomore Olivia Faria hit back-to-back triples after the Shamrocks cut the deficit to 36-32.

After a slow first quarter that saw two ties and three lead changes, Bishop Feehan came from a 4-1 hole to go up 10-8 after a layup for junior Mollie Mullen.

From there, Cheesebro took over for Dartmouth as she netted 14 of her 20 first-half points, including a nifty scoop layup to make it 23-18 as she claimed the program’s all-time scoring record with 1,841 points.

“It feels really good,” Cheesebro said about owning the program’s all-time scoring record. “That was a goal I set for myself at the beginning of my high school career. I’m just happy to achieve that. I just want to thank my coaches, teammates and, obviously, my parents because without their support that wouldn’t have been possible.”

The teams traded buckets the rest of the half with Cheesebro making it 29-23 with a coast-to-coast layup right before the break.

Jessica Gasper (’95) held Dartmouth’s record with 1,840 points.
