Men’s hockey: Gophers double up on Notre Dame’s home ice
The No. 4-ranked Gophers men’s hockey team doubled up on host Notre Dame 6-3 on Friday in South Bend, Ind.
Minnesota, (11-2, 5-0 Big Ten) netted three power-play goals in the game, with sophomore defenseman Sam Rinzel scoring twice on the man advantage.
Notre Dame (5-8, 1-6) twice took an early lead in the contest. The Fighting Irish scored in the opening two minutes, only to have that goal waved off. However, another goal just 69 seconds later counted to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.
The Gophers evened the count before the period’s end as junior forward Brody Lamb scored at 6:30 of the first to tie the game heading into the middle stanza.
Rinzel gave Minnesota the lead for good on his first power-play goal just 38 seconds into the second period.
The Gophers and Notre Dame traded goals late in the period before Rinzel’s second power-play tally with 24 seconds remaining before intermission staked the visitors to a 4-2 advantage.
Minnesota and Notre Dame allowed one another a power-play goal in the third period before junior forward Connor Kurth’s empty netter with just over 90 seconds to play finished off the night.
