Saturday’s high school tournament scores and highlights

CLASS A CROSS-COUNTRY

It was a clean sweep for the Needham girls in the Div. 1A state cross-country championship at Northfield-Mt. Hermon.

Greta Hammer won the individual title with a winning time of 18:13.91, allowing the Rockets to capture the team title (81 points). Lexington (86), Weymouth (89), Cambridge (95) and Newton North (107).

Cambridge placed second and fourth in the individual meet as Aoife Shovlin ran a 18:57.01 and Sophia Juanes Soto finished with a time of 19:05.91. Newton North’s Ciara Evans was third (19:02.62) and Lexington’s Janie Conrad was fifth (19:14.92).

Wellesley dominated the Div. 1B meet as Charlotte Tuxbury was the winner in 18:46.40. Teammate Emma Tuxbury was third (19:27.02) and Madeline Tuxbury was fourth (19:32.40).

That effort was good enough for second overall (55) behind Westford Academy, who won the team event with 50 points. Emily Wedlake keyed the win as she took second with 50 points. What helped the Grey Ghosts was their overall depth as four runners finished among the top 12.

Billerica turned in a dominant effort in the Div. 1C meet. The Indians placed three runners among the top and coasted to a team victory, the 36 points easily outdistancing runner-up Oliver Ames (65). Central Catholic (132), Bishop Feehan (153) and Notre Dame (Hingham) (155).

Gianna McGowan was the champion (18:44.15) with teammates Kylie Donahue (third, 19:42.50) and Caitlyn Donahue (fourth, 19:43.02) turning in impressive efforts. Braelyn Graham of Oliver Ames was the runner-up with a time of 19:29.42.

In the Div. 1A boys race, BC High left no doubt who ruled the roost.

Thanks to a 1-2-3 effort from Greg McGrath (15:50.23), John Wilson (16:01.47) and Shamus Larnard (16:02.32), the Eagles rolled to an easy team victory (57 points). Brookline was second (97) followed by Andover (126) and a tie between Lexington and Newton South (135).

Westford Academy standout Jack Graffeo won the Div. 1B race in a time of 15:41.07. Natick’s John Bianchi was the runner-up (16:01.00), followed by Ethan Sholk of Lincoln-Sudbury (16:02.16), Jared Ride of Belmont (16:14.95) and Nicholas Walker of Winchester (16:15.10).

Concord-Carlisle won the team title with 99 points, edging Natick by three points.

In the Div. 1C race, Billerica’s Mason Niles turned in a winning effort of 16:19.36, five seconds ahead of Chris Barbato of Reading (16:24.54). Michael Upton of Catholic Memorial was third in 16:30.12. Barbato’s effort helped Reading win the team title with 70 points, well ahead of Oliver Ames and Billerica (106).

Jordan Toribio ran for 91 yards and three scores as No. 1 St. John’s Prep (8-1) blanked 16th-seeded Attleboro 42-0 in a Div. 1 first-round contest. … Jareth Staine completed 12-of-18 passes for 247 yards and four touchdowns as No. 7 Springfield Central (8-1) defeated No. 10 Natick, 34-14.

Brady Selvais and Yandel Garcia each scored twice, while Cam Quigley picked off his fourth pass in the last three games as No. 6 Marblehead (7-2) cruised to a 42-6 win over No. 11 Norwood in the opening round of the Div. 4 tournament.

FIELD HOCKEY

The bitter taste of last year’s overtime loss to Reading in the Div. 2 state final never quite left the mouths of the Norwood field hockey team.

It’s not completely alleviated yet for the No. 1 Mustangs, but getting revenge on the eighth-seeded Rockets with a 1-0 Div. 2 state quarterfinal win on Saturday sure did taste sweet.

All-Scholastic senior Shea Larkee scored the game’s lone goal in the third quarter to break up a masterful display of defense from both sides, pairing with six defensive stands on penalty corners to highlight Norwood’s return to a second straight Final Four appearance.

The Mustangs will face the winner of Sunday’s No. 5 Canton-No. 13 Hopkinton matchup next.

“All of us have held onto that feeling of walking out of Worcester last year,” said Norwood head coach Allison Doliner. “I think to be able to beat them, and move on to the Final Four here on our own field, it just really kind of wraps up a bunch of loose ends from us from last year. No matter how much success we saw this season, that was still there. So this was just awesome.”

“Our team, we wanted it so bad,” Larkee added. “I’m so happy we got to (play here) and go get it.”

Teams traded rushes through the entire first half to no avail, limiting each other to a combined three shots on goal. Midfield play stood out, as did corner defenses on a combined seven opportunities.

Larkee couldn’t be held without a goal for much longer, though, as Norwood’s sixth corner of the game finally resulted in a score. She used her signature stickhandling to get around a defender at the top of the circle before firing in her 42nd goal of the season for the 1-0 lead.

“A whole half had gone by, 0-0, and I was just like, ‘Alright, enough of this,’ almost,” Larkee said. “I was just nose to goal. I saw what I had, I took my pull and I just ripped it. There was nothing really else going on in my head.”

Libby Quinn, Kendall Graves and Dani Bowers stood out for Reading to get down the field in response, producing three of its six corners in the second half – including one as time expired in regulation for one last bid at tying things up.

Norwood’s defense answered every call, though, with Evann O’Neil, Ava Hines and Bridget Sople leading the way. Emily Spadorcia was critical as a flyer on the defensive corners as well to limit shots on goal, and goalie Ava O’Neil picked up three of her four saves in the fourth quarter to preserve the win.

“The dynamic of (Spadorcia) and (Larkee) being our fly and our trail on the defensive corners … they have just been lock-down,” Doliner said. “It helps having Ava O’Neil behind them. Our whole defensive corner unit – Bridget Sople, Evann O’Neil, Ava Hines, depending on who’s in there – they really are just cohesive together. … They’re a tough crew to get around.”

Elsewhere in Div. 2, Siena Brackett, Sam Ruddick and Libby Baxter scored as No. 6 Hingham (18-2-1) advanced to the Final Four for the second straight season with a 3-0 win over third-seeded Notre Dame (Hingham).

Rachel Egan scored five goals and teammate Carolina Andrade added three as No. 2 Watertown (20-0) rolled into the Div. 3 state semifinals with an 8-0 win over No. 10 Bedford. Kaylee Master had four assists for the Raiders. … Olivia Melanson scored the game-winning goal with 14:22 left to give No. 12 Medway (8-9-2) a 2-1 win over fourth-seeded Medfield.

Sienna Snyder and Kayla Bohlin each scored twice as No. 9 Wellesley (14-3-4) defeated 17th-seeded King Philip in a Div. 1 state quarterfinal. … Ella Sewall, Avery Pitts and Caroline Samaras scored as No. 4 Andover (18-2-1) defeated fifth-seeded Belmont, 3-0.

BOYS SOCCER

In a Div. 3 second round matchup, Aidan Costa scored the game-winner in overtime to lift No. 13 Old Rochester (16-4-1) past No. 4 Dedham, 2-1. … Bret Amorosino netted two tallies as No. 9 Norwell (18-1-2) defeated No. 8 Weston 5-0.

Drew Luoto scored the game’s only goal in overtime, lifting No. 8 St. John’s (Shrewsbury) (14-6-0) to a 1-0 win over No. 24 Needham in a Div. 1 second-round contest.

GIRLS SOCCER

In the Div. 2 second round, Maggie Blosser and Violet Malinowski each netted hat tricks with an assist as top-seeded Masconomet (19-0-1) shutout No. 17 Westfield 6-0. … Maddie Fernandes scored off an assist from Ally Fernandes as No. 4 Mansfield (14-2-3) topped No. 20 Grafton 1-0. … Olivia Coperine had a hat trick and Meg Carney added a pair as No. 2 Duxbury (18-1-1) took down No. 15 Notre Dame of Hingham 7-1.

Tessa Hunt scored twice as No. 2 Hamilton-Wenham (16-0-4) blanked No. 18 Ipswich 7-0 in the Div. 4 second round.

In a Div. 5 second round game, Fallon Ryan scored twice and Elly Thomas notched a pair, which included her 100th and 101st career goal, as No. 2 Hull (14-2-4) defeated No. 15 Ayer Shirley, 5-1. … Emma Collette scored in the second minute as No. 6 St. John Paul (16-4-1) edged No. 11 Monson 1-0 to advance to the quarterfinals for the first time in program history.

VOLLEYBALL

In a Div. 5 quarterfinal contest, Nola Timo notched nine kills, seven digs and three aces as top-seeded Bourne (18-5) swept Wareham 3-0.

Senior Addyson Smock collected 17 kills and four blocks as No. 2 Oliver Ames (20-3) took down No. 7 Longmeadow 3-1 in the Div. 2 quarterfinals.
