St. Paul celebrates grand opening of new soccer fields at Highwood Hills Recreation Center

The city of St. Paul, community partners and students celebrated the grand opening of the new Highwood Hills Recreation Center soccer fields on Tuesday.

The three soccer fields are the latest in a slate of updated amenities completed with funds from St. Paul’s Common Cent 1% sales tax.

The soccer fields were completed in partnership with Minnesota United FC of St. Paul and The Toro Company of Bloomington.

The rec center, located at 2191 Londin Lane E., reopened in 2019 — 11 years after it closed its doors due to recession-era budget pressures.

The rec center is located on St. Paul’s East Side, adjacent to Highwood Hills Elementary School. The grounds also include a small picnic area, a playground and basketball courts. More info at stpaul.gov/facilities/highwood-hills-recreation-center.

On Tuesday, St. Paul Mayor Melvin Carter made remarks — and played a little soccer with students from Highwood Hills Elementary School. Others who spoke at the event were: Andy Rodriguez, director of St. Paul’s Parks & Recreation; St. Paul City Council Member Cheniqua Johnson (Ward 7); state Sen. Foung Hawj (DFL-St. Paul); Marnie Wells, Toro Foundation president; and Manny Lagos, MNUFC chief development officer and senior technical advisor.
