Editorial: John Deaton for U.S. Senate

Elizabeth Warren has to go. We’re sure Harvard University would welcome the liberal senator back into its out-of-touch cocoon.

The GOP’s John Deaton, a former military prosecutor, is a great replacement for her in Washington. He will not hide from the difficult issues this state must deal with today — especially the migrant crisis. That alone would bring some hope of stability back to Boston and beyond.

Deaton said he would not support former President Donald Trump’s plan to begin the largest mass deportation event in U.S. history, but said he does think there are some people who need to be deported. Not exactly on the mark, but a heck of a start.

“It’s a national security issue,” he said at his recent debate with Warren.

“She supports an open border,” Deaton added.

Republicans love to demonize immigrants, Warren shot back, but they don’t want to fix the border.

“Because it works as an election issue,” she said.

That’s her point of view. Massachusetts is facing a $1 billion annual cost — a ballpark estimate — to handle the migrant wave that has left new arrivals sleeping on the floor at Logan Airport. There just aren’t enough old prisons, hotels, and rec centers to cope with the onslaught. And is it fair to the immigrants? No!

The U.S. Senate race is more about offering opposing viewpoints in this state. The Democratic stranglehold is hurting our economy. Putting Warren in the same room with Gov. Maura Healey, Mayor Michelle Wu, Sen. Ed Markey, and reps. Katherine Clark, Ayanna Pressley, Lori Trahan, Jim McGovern, Richard Neal, and Bill Keating is just an echo chamber. They all seem to first agree to agree.

Reps. Jake Auchincloss and Seth Moulton are independent-minded, more so than the others, but still too close for comfort.

This state needs a John Deaton to challenge this cabal.

The votes are already being mailed in and Deaton deserves a chance to break a trend in Massachusetts politics that has grown old. The state’s independents, Republicans and fiscally responsible Democrats deserve better.

Warren has been given long enough to make her mark. She has failed. She bowed out of the last presidential race and has slipped back to press release and choreographed appearances to protect her image.

That’s not what politics should be about.

We need someone who is brave enough to challenge the status quo and push for what works for taxpayers. John Deaton deserves a chance to break the ice and try to get things done for us.

Other able Republicans didn’t dare to challenge Warren, but Deaton did.

Warren’s campaign machine is tough to beat. She has the dollars and the anti-Trump message to dip into. But do we need just another Democrat with a like-minded agenda to represent us?

Enough. Warren had her chance; Deaton deserves the same.
