Wild beat Columbus, 3-1, to extend points streak to five games

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Wild’s season-starting points streak continues.

Filip Gustavsson stopped 23 shots for his third win in five starts, and Marco Rossi, Kirill Kaprizov and Mats Zuccarello scored goals as the Wild beat the Columbus Blue Jackets, 3-1, on Saturday at Nationwide Arena.

The Wild (3-0-2) have points in all five of their games, and have yet to trail in regulation this season, a run of 300 minutes. That’s the fourth longest streak to start a season in NHL history, according to NHL Stats.

The Wild’s two losses were to Winnipeg in overtime and Seattle in a shootout.

Gustavsson stopped 23 of 24 shots against and didn’t allow a goal until Yegor Chinakhov scored off a neutral zone turnover with 1:25 remaining. Danil Tarazov stopped 32 of 35 shots for Columbus.

Rossi put the Wild up in the first period, taking a pass from Marcus Foligno alone in the slot and beating Taranov high and to the left for a 1-0 lead at 12:40 of the first period.

Jake Middleton appeared to make it 2-0 at 5:12 of the second period when he cleaned up his own shot, which bled underneath Taranov, for an easy goal. But the goal was nullified when officials reviewed the play and deemed Jakub Lauko to have pushed a Jackets defender into Taranov, causing him to fall.

Instead, the teams played to a standstill until early in the third period, when Jordan Harris threw the puck out of play and was called for delay of game. Sixteen seconds later, Cole Sillinger was called for tripping, giving the Wild a 5-on-3 advantage.

Wild coach John Hynes called a timeout to set up a play, and it took only 6 seconds for Minnesota to take a 2-0 lead at 17:08 on a one-timer from the right circle by Kaprizov, a signature shot for the Wild’s sniper. Joe Eriksson Ek won the faceoff to get it to Matt Boldy, who threw the puck back to Brock Faber.

Faber then sent a diagonal pass to Kaprizov alone in the circle, and his shot beat Taranov between his shoulder and the near post.

Zuccarello made it 3-0 at 8:25 of the third when he finished a quick rush. After taking the puck into the zone, he played give and go with Kaprizov and skated into the crease to beat Taranov 5 hole with a backhand.
