Wednesday’s high school scores and highlights
ROUNDUP
Longtime Methuen wrestling and cross-country coach Bill James passed away, 13 months after a severe home accident resulted in a broken neck which left him without the use of arms and legs.
One of greatest wrestling coaches in state history, James, 57, coached at Ipswich (1985-88), Hamilton-Wenham (1990-94), Bishop Guerin (1994-96), Minuteman (1998-99) and Nashua (1999) before taking over at Methuen where his teams were generally among the best in New England. His career record was 492-167-6 (373 of the wins came at Methuen).
“Billy was a great guy, a fantastic coach who was great to the kids,” said Bruce Rich, who coached at Chelmsford from 1979-2020. “I just can’t say enough about him. He was a role model for everyone in the sport. It’s a sad day.”
James guided the Rangers to several Merrimack Valley Conference titles as well as the Division 1 state team title in 2012, a year in which he was inducted into the Massachusetts State Wrestling Hall of Fame. He coached and developed seven individual New England, 16 All-State and 30 state champions.
“Bill was very good at what he did, he was all business on the mat,” said Andover coach Mike Bolduc, who had a couple of nephews who wrestled for James. “He was very loyal to his assistant coaches, many of those guys could be head coaches anywhere. When you can keep them in the program, that tells you a lot about Bill.”
James is survived by his wife Laurie, daughter Erica and son Brock.
