Two Patriots starters absent from final practice before London trip

FOXBORO — The Patriots’ offense likely will be shorthanded again this Sunday.

Top running back Rhamondre Stevenson (foot) and starting left tackle Vederian Lowe (ankle) both were absent from Thursday’s practice outside Gillette Stadium — the team’s last before it heads to London for its Week 7 matchup with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Stevenson has not practiced or played since exiting New England’s Week 5 loss to Miami. He missed last Sunday’s 41-21 loss to the Houston Texans, and the Patriots’ run game struggled in his absence. Running backs Antonio Gibson, JaMycal Hasty and Terrell Jennings combined for 44 yards on 21 carries, with quarterback Drake Maye gaining a team-best 38 yards on five rushing attempts.

Lowe was injured during the Houston game when Maye was sacked into his right ankle. The 25-year-old tackle also missed two contests earlier in the season with a knee injury.

Losing Lowe for this week’s game could lead to even more shuffling of the Patriots’ depleted offensive line, including a potential move back to right tackle for Mike Onwenu. Onwenu, who started the last two games at right guard, said he’s taken reps at both positions this week.

The Patriots did receive some good news on the injury front. Cornerback/punt returner Marcus Jones returned to practice after sitting out Wednesday with a groin injury and illness. Jones was seen wearing a mask in the locker room before practice.

Maye appeared no worse for wear after landing on Wednesday’s injury report (knee, full participation). The rookie QB was not wearing any visible brace and did not appear physically limited during the portion of Thursday’s practice that was open to reporters.

Offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt said before practice that he was “not concerned” about Maye’s knee.

“It’s really (a question for) the head coach and trainers, but he looked good to me (on Wednesday),” Van Pelt said.

Asked whether Maye’s injury would affect New England’s play-calling this weekend, Van Pelt replied: “We’ll see as we go on through the course of the week, but right now, I think it’s probably precautionary.”

New England is scheduled to practice at the Harrow School in London ahead of Sunday’s international matchup with Jacksonville at Wembley Stadium.
