Patriots extra points: Why DeMario Douglas is a favorite of Drake Maye

FOXBORO — Patriots quick-twitch wide receiver DeMario Douglas is preparing to head across the pond, where he’ll undoubtedly see red telephone boxes on the streets of London.

On Wednesday, quarterback Drake Maye said Douglas could get open in one.

“Yeah, Pop, you can’t guard him in a phone booth,” Maye quipped. “He’s tough to guard in man coverage, and he’s got a knack for finding zones. So, he’s a great guy to have out there and makes my job a little easier. Any time you see a man matchup, Pop is somebody that you want to go to, and we have guys on the outside that can make plays, which you saw on Sunday as well.”

Patriots offensive star among 3 players absent at Wednesday practice

Douglas has broken out over the last four weeks. His best game — and first career touchdown — came in Sunday’s 41-21 loss to the Texans with Maye at quarterback. Douglas was also Maye’s leading target.

The undersized slot receiver had been pining for a touchdown all offseason. After the game, a Patriots equipment staffer taped up and wrote the details of Douglas’ score on the touchdown. The 2023 sixth-round pick put it in his house in front of his TV.

Douglas figures to be a prominent part of the offense for the rest of the season.

“Look, he’s one of our best route runners,” head coach Jerod Mayo said. “He can really run any route, and he does a great job getting open. Now we’re finding him, and the quarterbacks are making good throws to him, and he’s picking up a lot of yards.”

Douglas showed some frustration early in the season when he had two catches on three targets for 12 yards through the first two weeks of the season. He was held target-less Week 2 against the Seahawks.
