Marshfield nonprofit, Teamsters and community turn out to deliver Hurricane Helene relief supplies to North Carolina

Marshfield and surrounding communities worked together to send off truckloads of relief supplies Tuesday to people recovering in the wreckage of Hurricane Helene.

Donna Green, founder and executive director of Magical Moon Farm and Foundation, said the idea for to collect donations came to her after seeing the devastation in North Carolina left in the wake of Hurricane Helene.

“I’d been through that kind of disaster myself, and I kind of knew how devastated they’d be without homes and basics and thought about the situation with the water, the mud and all that,” said Green. “So I made a list of all the things that they could possibly use, and just started posting on social media.”

New traveled fast, Green said. One post got 150 shares, then another got 175, and a third hit 130.

By the time the last truck left Tuesday, Teamsters said, the community gathered loads of critical supplies including chainsaws, generators, garden loppers, work gloves, hornet spray, water waders, horse quality hay, buckets, fence repair materials, water and more.

Along with Magical Moon Farm and Foundation, which supports children with cancer and other life-threatening diseases, the Teamsters jumped in to help drive supplies down and the founder of M&M Transport rented a truck to bring more.

“Hurricane Helene caused severe infrastructure damage in western North Carolina and rebuilding will be a long, difficult process,” Teamsters Local 25 President Thomas Mari said. “Teamsters Local 25 will continue driving relief supplies and supporting all efforts to help the people who are suffering due to the unimaginable impacts of this storm.”

Teamsters Local 25 drove another truck of donated water and baby wipes to the region just over a week before.

The trucks will take the supplies donated in Marshfield to the Hurricane Helene Disaster Relief Drop Site and Distribution Center in Mill Spring, North Carolina, to be distributed.

Green said the drive was “way, way bigger” than expected, and items came not just from the tight-knit community in Marshfield but all down the South Shore.

“I filled yesterday’s truck, and then today’s truck; we completely cleared all the tables off and everything went in the truck,” said Green. “And when I woke up this morning, I went out there and all the tables were filled again. It was like angels came in the night and just filled up all the tables again.”

Over 100 people came out to help, Green said, describing it as a “really powerful feeling.”

“It was unbelievable how many people showed up,” said Green. “The thing that just made my heart sing was they could be wearing red hats, blue hats; it didn’t matter. They were all here for the same reason: taking care of our neighbors down south.”
