Angus Sampson back for the ride on ‘The Lincoln Lawyer’ S3

This Thursday as “The Lincoln Lawyer” launches Season 3 on Netflix, Angus Sampson is enjoying the ride of his life.

Not just literally on a Harley tearing down Las Vegas’ famously neon Strip as he does in an early episode, but by being able to explore unknown dimensions of burly, bearded Cisco, the investigator and foot soldier for Mickey Haller (Manuel Garcia-Rulfo), the celebrated LA defense lawyer dubbed the Lincoln lawyer because he began by practicing law out of the back seat of his Lincoln.

In S2 Cisco married Lorna, who weirdly enough is his boss’s ex-wife and now Haller’s office manager and associate. The families that work together are indeed very close friends.

Each season covers one of Michael Connelly’s Mickey Haller books. This one is the 5th “The Gods of Guilt.”

“Cisco got married in Season 2 but I wouldn’t suggest that he’s domestically trained. I certainly feel grateful to the (writing) team for putting the two of us together. You wouldn’t think having this very large motorcycle guy and this little ray of sunshine as a partnership but they’re becoming more and more a team as the series evolves.”

Sampson, 45, was speaking from his ranch Down Under.

Cisco we see is not just tough when threatened, he’s canny about how to, say, finagle security footage from a first-rate hotel without the bother of a court order.

“I’ve had as much fun as the audience discovering why and how Cisco has ended up working in this gray area of the law,” Sampson said. “Where sometimes you need to go around the obstacles in order to ascertain the answers.”

He met his real-life inspiration and counterpart filming S3. “Michael (Connelly) brought in the original Cisco, the real life Cisco, who I met on set in Los Angeles. He was very complimentary and kind as to my performance portraying him. But I must admit I was a little embarrassed that he was there.

“I was like, I hope he doesn’t think I’m not doing a service.”

As so often happens in life, any physical resemblance is nonexistent.

“None at all. I think I’m a good seven or eight inches taller and I’m about three times as wide. I hope Michael doesn’t mind me saying this, but he actually works with Michael now in real life — as a researcher and fact checker for his books and in regards to state laws and what have you.

“In real life Michael originally met him at a book signing. He was a fan and stood in line. At least that’s my understanding of the genesis of their relationship.”
