Celtics bring back ‘fully cleared’ guard, waive rookie forward

Jay Scrubb is getting another chance to crack the Celtics’ roster.

The 24-year-old shooting guard, who tore his ACL in a Celtics practice last October, re-signed with Boston on an Exhibit 10 contract this week.

Scrubb’s return was first reported by Bobby Manning of CLNS Media. In an Instagram post, Scrubb confirmed his knee is “fully cleared” a year removed from his injury.

Before signing a two-way deal with the Celtics last offseason, Scrubb spent time with the Los Angeles Clippers and Orlando Magic, appearing in 24 games over his first three NBA seasons. He also logged stints with both teams’ G League affiliates.

The Clippers selected Scrubb in the second round of the 2020 NBA Draft (55th overall) out of John A. Logan, a junior college in Illinois. His most recent NBA appearance came with Orlando on April 4, 2023.

Scrubb’s E-10 deal with Boston is a training camp tryout contract with no guaranteed money. He’ll have three preseason games to showcase his talents for president of basketball operations Brad Stevens and head coach Joe Mazzulla (vs. Philadelphia this Saturday, vs. Toronto this Sunday and at Toronto next Tuesday), with a G League assignment in Maine his most likely path to open the regular season.

He is eligible to have his contract converted into a two-way deal, but the Celtics’ three two-way slots already are filled by Drew Peterson, JD Davison and second-round rookie Anton Watson. Boston has one open spot on its 15-man roster that it could choose to leave vacant entering the season.

Scrubb played well for the Celtics’ 2023 Summer League team before his injury, averaging 14.4 points per game across five appearances while shooting 46.3% from the floor and 40.0% from 3-point range.

In a corresponding roster move, the Celtics waived Tristan Enaruna, an undrafted rookie forward out of Cleveland State. Enaruna, who was part of this year’s Celtics Summer League squad, was one of just three Boston players who did not see action in either of the team’s two exhibition games in Abu Dhabi, along with injured center Kristaps Porzingis and resting veteran Al Horford.

The Celtics are scheduled to practice this Thursday and Friday before hosting the 76ers at TD Garden in their first home game of the preseason.
