Weymouth defeats Milton for the first time in 12 years in 28-21 battle

WEYMOUTH – It was a victory 12 years in the making.

Weymouth defeated Milton 28-21 in a Bay State Conference football matchup that saw Weymouth continue its undefeated run and take down Milton for the first time since Sept. 7, 2012.

“Growing up, you watch the high school team lose to Milton every year,” senior captain Naheem Ridore said. “To change that, it’s very special.”

Head coach Michael Donovan noted that beating a high quality opponent like Milton is a huge boost to the team’s morale, especially with senior captain Cam Aieta out with an injury.

“They’re an awesome team,” Donovan said. “Any time you get a win over a team like that, it’s an awesome feeling.”

Weymouth struck first in the opening quarter when Michael Farrow forced a fumble and eventually scored on a wildcat play. Milton would battle back to tie it in the early stages of the second quarter when Patrick Collins connected with Harrison Hinckle for a four-yard touchdown.

The tie game didn’t last long, as Tyler Munchbach would score an 80-yard rushing touchdown early in the next drive.

“Coach just said keep pounding and it’s going to spring,” Munchbach said. “That’s what happened on my big run.”

Weymouth would force another punt and Munchbach would score his second consecutive touchdown, this time from 28 yards. Milton had a strong close to the half, but a goal line stand and a missed field goal kept the score at 21-7.

Weymouth would punt to start the second half and Milton drove all the way to the one-yard line. However, Weymouth earned another goal line stand and forced the turnover on downs.

“That’s Weymouth football,” Donovan said. “Those are situations that we have been practicing since the first day of training camp. When those come up, these kids don’t flinch.”

Weymouth would then drive the length of the field and Farrow punched in his second touchdown of the day to make it 28-7. However, Milton didn’t quit.

It started with a Patrick Collins 15-yard rushing touchdown before a lengthy drive ended with a Collins passing touchdown to Ryan Fulton with 13 seconds remaining. Weymouth then would get the onside kick and had an end zone shot, but the Weymouth defense forced an incompletion and sealed the victory.

“We knew it was going to come down to the last play,” Donovan said. “I’m just so proud of our kids for the effort they put in.”
