The Tesla Model 3 is up to a record 2nd place in Spain in September.

Spanish new car sales return to positive in September at +6.3% to 73,144 units, leading to a year-to-date volume up 4.7% to 744,698. This is however 23% below the pre-pandemic 9 months 2019 tally. Of note is EV sales surging 20% year-on-year to 10,392 and 14.2%, tilting its YTD total into positive territory at +0.6% to 80,225 and 10.8% share. As for channels, sales to rental companies soar 34.4% to 4,773 while private sales are up a solid 10.5% to 36,639. Reversely company sales drop -1.1% to 31,732. So far this year, rentals are up 32.6% to 156,639, private sales up 7.5% to 324,773 and company sales off -9.6% to 263,286. Looking at regions, Asturias (+52.1%), Baleares (+30.8%) and Cantabria (+18.5%) are the most dynamic ahead of Madrid (+11.9%) representing a whopping 40.2% of the total market.

Toyota (+17.2%) tops the brands ranking again with 9.2% share, in line with its YTD level of 9.3%. Renault (+47.3%) shoots up four spots on August to #2 and 7.4% share vs. #5 and 6% so far this year. Volkswagen (+16.6%) is also very solid at #3 and accesses the 2nd place YTD as a result. Hyundai (+32.3%) ensures the Top 4 carmakers all sport double-digit gains. Kia (-9.7%) is in difficulty at #5 ahead of Seat (+24.5%) and Dacia (+32.4%) both rallying back up. Reversing its recent poor form, Tesla (+298.1%) breaks its ranking (#12), volume (2,894) and share (4%) records, its previous best being #15 with 2,470 sales and 3.2% last November. Chinese fare Omoda continues to impress at #22 and 1.1% share, BYD is up 1195.8% to #25 while Lancia makes its reappearance in the charts with a lonely one sale for now.

Over in the models charts, the Dacia Sandero (+93.1%) almost doubles its sales year-on-year to reach 3.6% of the market vs. 3.2% so far this year. The event of the month is the arrival in 2nd place of the Tesla Model 3, up an extravagant +4254.9% year-on-year. The nameplate obviously breaks all records at 2,221 sales and 3% share, with its previous best at #7, 1,639 sales and 2.1% share in November 2023. The rest of the Top 5 all beat the market with double-digit upticks: the Renault Clio is up 76.1% to #3, the Toyota C-HR up 15.4% to #4 and the Hyundai Tucson up 28.5% to #5. Notice also the Renault Austral (+103.4%) breaking into the Top 10 at #9, the Seat Ibiza up 74.4% and the Toyota Yaris Cross up 57.7%.
