Watch live Karen Read murder trial Day 22: Trooper Bukhenik to return to the stand

One of the principal investigators of Boston Police Officer John O’Keefe’s 2022 homicide will return to the stand in the 22nd day of Karen Read’s murder trial, which is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. in Norfolk Superior Court in Dedham.

It will be the third trial day in a row that Massachusetts State Police Sgt. Yuriy Bukhenik will testify in the case. That lengthy testimony has so far in the trial only been matched by that of Jennifer McCabe, another central figure in the case.

Read, 44, of Mansfield, faces charges of second-degree murder, motor vehicle manslaughter and leaving the scene of a collision causing the death of O’Keefe, a 16-year Boston Police officer when he died at age 46. Prosecutors say that she struck him with her SUV in the early hours of Jan. 29, 2022, following an argument and a night of heavy drinking and left him to die in a snowstorm. Defense attorneys counter that an outside person or people beat O’Keefe to death in the Fairview Road home and framed Read for his murder.

Bukhenik is a supervisor for the MSP detectives stationed at the Norfolk District Attorney’s office. These detectives have jurisdiction over investigating homicides in the county. In this capacity, he supervised Trooper Michael Proctor, the assigned “case officer” and chief investigator for the case, who has yet to take the stand.
