Karen Read murder trial Day 9: A full day of new witnesses

The Karen Read murder trial really started heating up with the testimony of two members of the Albert family yesterday. The ninth day of testimony is set to begin at 9 a.m. in Norfolk Superior Court.

On Thursday, husband and wife Christopher and Julie Albert testified to going out with Read and John O’Keefe in the hours preceding his death on Jan. 29, 2022, on the front lawn of 34 Fairview Road in Canton.

READ: Who has testified so far in the trial? Who is on the witness lists?

Read, 44, of Mansfield, faces charges of second-degree murder, motor vehicle manslaughter and leaving the scene of a collision causing the death of O’Keefe, a 16-year Boston cop and her boyfriend of about two years when he died at age 46.

Christopher Albert is the younger brother of Brian Albert, who, along with his wife Nicole Albert, were the owners of 34 Fairview Road. It was the family home where all seven Albert siblings had grown up, Christopher Albert testified, and it was sold just months after O’Keefe’s death.

Christopher and Julie Albert are also the parents of Colin Albert, their middle child and one of three people Read’s defense lawyers had pointed to having opportunity and motive to kill O’Keefe and frame Read. The other two are Brian Albert and his friend, ATF Agent Brian Higgins, who the defense said had a romantic history with Read.

Colin Albert was the only one of the three to not drink with Read and O’Keefe at Waterfall Bar and Grill in central Canton the evening of Jan. 28 into Jan. 29, 2022. Christopher and Julie Albert were there, as were Brian Albert and Higgins, among others.

The party made the decision to continue the get together after the bar closed that night at 34 Fairview Road. Julie Albert left the bar early because of a migraine, she said, and did not attend the after party. Christopher Albert stayed until bar close, at 12:13 a.m., and walked home to go to bed as the snow started to fall in what would become a major snow storm.

Court will start at 9 a.m. for a full day with new witnesses.

This is a developing story.
