Mastering the five-minute makeup look

For years, celebs from Pamela Anderson to Zoe Kravitz have gone makeup-free or embraced a no-makeup makeup look. It’s all about having a vibrant glow that enhances a healthy sparkle of skin and plays up one’s natural beauty.

But it’s not just about wearing less, it’s wearing the right things. This esthetic relies on high-quality foundations and creams to help with any blemishes and lip glosses, creamy blushes, and glistening highlighters.

To learn more, I tracked down Isabel Madison, CEO of the cosmetics company Nude Envie. She’s created a line of products that work on all complexions, multi-task and achieve a five-minute makeup look. I personally love the line — so much that I sell it at my salon and day spa, Grettacole (we have the exclusive on Isabel’s line in the Boston area).

“Our nudes work beautifully in professional, formal, and informal environments,” Isabel says.

I caught up with Isabel when she came into town last week to do an event with me at Grettacole. And I asked her more about the line, how she came to create it, how to use it, and how to best achieve the desired, naturally beautiful effect.

“I grew up the daughter of a biochemist that did formulations for makeup companies,” says Isabel. “I was always mixing different makeups to get the effect that I wanted, but everything was so chalky and gray.” She was after the perfect nude color. “Everyone thinks nude means a light brown. But to me, it means the color of our skin tone, and the color of our lips.”

So during the two-year process of trying to create the perfect nude lip shade for herself, she wound up creating seven of them. “People would see me wearing this one I created called called Radiate, and everyone would ask, ‘What are you wearing?’” All other lipsticks were matte and red at that point, she recalls, “and in my opinion red lipstick ages us. I wanted creamy and hydrated and decadent and luscious.”

Barneys New York picked up the line. So Isabel added two lipliners and eyeshadows, and the entire collection was off to the races. “It turned into a complete collection for everyday makeup. To be worn to the gym, to the yoga studio, to work,” she says.  “There’s no reason why, if it’s easy to put on, we can’t wear a little color and look healthy.”

To that end, she’s focused on products that work together — whether it’s lipstick, eyeshadow, or blush, each wears well with the others. “They’re made to blend and look like they belong on the face and not look overdone,” says Isabel, citing how sheer the formulas are. “The effect is happy and healthy and alive.”

Right now, she says, everyone is liking the warmer colors — the peachier tones. “As we go into summer, people appreciate those hues more.” She points to a cream highlighter that is the line’s number one seller. “There’s no shimmer or glitter in it,” she says. “So it catches the light and just looks like the most beautiful skin.” And the eyeshadows are equally simple — just brush a couple of coats onto your lids for a subtle shimmer that absorbs into the skin so it will catch the light but won’t cake onto any creases.

The line is also safe and nourishing. It’s free of chemical and sulfates, and is chock full of hydrating and decadent ingredients — vitamin E, jojoba oil, shea butter, crushed pearls, and hyaluronic acid. Meanwhile it’s all certified vegan, cruelty free, paraben free, and gluten-free.

Moreover, it’s practical. “I’m not a makeup artist, and I don’t have a makeup artist hiding in my bathrooms,” Isabel laughs. “I need to be able to put something on easily, quickly, and not think, Oh my God — did I make a mistake?” It’s also long-lasting. “The blushes are cream that you put on first, followed by a powder for extra glow — and it lasts 12 hours,” she adds. “People don’t have a lot of time to put makeup on. They want to look amazing, easily.”
