Red Sox acquire hard throwing left-hander from White Sox
The Red Sox bolstered their minor league pitching depth on Tuesday, acquiring left-hander Bailey Horn from the Chicago White Sox in exchange for cash considerations. Horn was optioned to Triple-A Worcester, and with his addition the club’s 40-man roster is now at 39.
The 26-year-old Horn was designated for assignment by the White Sox on April 26 after he was originally acquired in a trade with the Chicago Cubs on February 27. The lefty has a 4.60 ERA with 236 strikeouts in 184 career minor league innings, but this season he had gotten off to a rough start, allowing 13 runs in 10.1 innings in Triple-A.
Entering the season Horn ranked as the No. 28 prospect in the Cubs organization according to Baseball America, who describes Horn as a power pitcher who needs to work on his consistency.
“His fastball sits 94-96 mph, touches 98 and gets swings and misses when he throws it over the plate,” Baseball America’s scouting report reads. “His sharp, 84-86 mph slider flashes plus and is a wipeout offering at its best. His big-breaking, 75-79 mph curveball with sweep and depth is an above-average pitch that he can land on the backfoot of righties. Horn has plenty of stuff, but he struggles to repeat his delivery and has a violent arm action that yields well below-average control and significant injury risk.”
Originally from Texas, Horn was a fifth-round pick out of Auburn University by the White Sox in the 2020 MLB Draft.
