A Duxbury man who killed his father by “baptizing” him in a local pond because the son apparently saw the “demon” in his dad’s eyes has been convicted, according to the DA.

Jack Callahan, 22, was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter on Thursday, the Plymouth district attorney’s office announced.

Callahan had been charged with one count of murder after the fatal incident in the middle of the night on June 28, 2021, when he was 19 years old. His father, 57-year-old Scott Callahan, was found submerged in Island Creek Pond at Crocker Park.

Before the drowning, the teen at the time had reportedly picked up his dad in Boston and the two headed home to Duxbury in a ride-share, stopping at the park. That’s where the DA said the father and son got into a “physical altercation.”

Then at 2 a.m., Duxbury police were called to the family home where they found the teen “acting erratically.” Callahan was reportedly “distraught and hyperventilating.”

Police and fire personnel rushed to the pond where they found his father submerged in the water. EMS performed life-saving measures, and he was transported to Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital-Plymouth, where he was pronounced dead.

Detectives later found out that Callahan submerged his father under the water several times, “claiming he was ‘baptizing’ his father because he saw the ‘demon’ in his eyes.”

The state Office of the Chief Medical Examiner determined that the cause of death was drowning, and that the manner was homicide. The father had water-logged lungs, and an abrasion on his head.

Callahan’s trial lasted eight days, and a jury deliberated for about 25 hours before finding him guilty of involuntary manslaughter.

Sentencing has been scheduled for May 3.
