Battenfeld: Healey delivers rebuke to transportation czar, saying no to new tolls on the border
Gov. Maura Healey scrambled to contain the political damage from the controversial comments made by her off-the-reservation transportation secretary, saying she won’t propose putting tolls on the New Hampshire border.
Healey delivered a swift rebuke of Secretary Monica Tibbits-Nutt on Monday, saying her comments about tolls and other remarks “do not represent the views of this administration.”
Funny when your transportation secretary does not speak for your transportation policy. Maybe it’s time to find a new one.
It was just the latest attempt by Healey to douse a controversy within her administration, which has been rocked recently by the growing cost of housing migrants and reports of record numbers of Massachusetts residents fleeing the state due to high taxes and cost of living.
“We are going after all the people who should be giving us money to make our transportation better,” Tibbits-Nutt said during a WalkMassachusetts event last week.
That remark – a reference to higher taxes and fees – also appeared to draw the ire of Healey, who has sought to cultivate the image as a tax-cutter.
“Our top priorities are making Massachusetts a more affordable place and bringing people together to get things done,” Healey said.
While the Democratic governor did slap her down on tolls and higher taxes, she did not go further and expressed full confidence in Tibbits-Nutt, her hand-picked choice to helm the critical Cabinet post.
“The Secretary’s comments do not represent the views of this administration and to be clear, I am not proposing tolls at any border,” Healey said. “I have spoken to the Secretary and made that clear, and that I have confidence in her leadership moving forward in this important time as we work to ensure a strong and robust transportation system.”
Sounds like Tibbits-Nutt got a stern talking to and that’s it.
That did not appease the conservative MassFiscal, which called on Healey to fire Tibbits-Nutt – which is clearly not going to happen.
It was not just the new tolls that got MassFiscal and the MassGOP so revved up, it was also the condescending tone of Tibbits-Nutt’s musings – like her promise to go after pick-up truck owners.
““We can’t price them high enough, or put enough fees on them to stop the type of person who wants to buy that car,” she said. “And I’m 100 percent passing judgment on someone who wants to drive basically an 18-wheeler as their own personal car.”
The power-hungryTibbits-Nutt also declared, “Once I say it, it’s now a policy.”
Apparently not.
Not all of Tibbits-Nutt’s rants were off base. She also promised to crack down on speeding motorists — a growing problem on the state’s dangerous, out of control highways.
Police and courts need to be more vigilant keeping those reckless motorists off the road.
