Red Sox injury update: Rafael Devers expected back Monday, Nick Pivetta progressing

With each day seemingly bringing more bad injury news for the Red Sox, Sunday offered a welcome reprieve as manager Alex Cora provided a series of encouraging updates.

Rafael Devers, who sat his fourth straight game with a sore shoulder on Sunday, is expected back in the lineup for Monday morning’s series opener against the Cleveland Guardians.

“I think he’ll be ready for tomorrow,” Cora said. “Just playing it smart, he’s too important for us, not only now but in the future, so we’ll take care of him so he can take care of us.”

In addition to Devers, Cora said Nick Pivetta (right elbow flexor strain) is feeling good after playing catch and will continue to throw in the coming days. Infielder Romy Gonzalez (left wrist sprain) is expected back “sooner rather than later,” potentially as soon as he’s eligible to come off the injured list on April 21, and second baseman Enmanuel Valdez is fine after leaving Saturday’s game with a bruised left thumb. He wouldn’t have started Sunday anyway against a lefty and is available off the bench, Cora said.

Cora also said Trevor Story’s season-ending shoulder surgery on Friday went as the club expected. He added that he spoke to Story afterwards and that the shortstop is still processing everything, but he’s confident the two-time All-Star will find a way to put this latest setback behind him.

“He’ll be back,” Cora said. “He’ll put the work, he’ll do the same things that he did in the offseason to put himself in a position to be an elite shortstop and a big league player, and I have no doubts he’ll do that.”
