OJ Simpson has died of cancer, his family announced today on social media. He was 76.

The family tweeted: “On April 10th, our father, Orenthal James Simpson, succumbed to his battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his children and grandchildren. During this time of transition, his family asks that you please respect their wishes for privacy and grace. -The Simpson Family”

Simpson, 76, had a stellar football career, and was a Hollywood star as well, before being charged with the brutal murders of his ex-wife and a male associate in 1994. Though Simpson was acquitted in 1995 following a highly controversial trial, his acting career and reputation all but died.

He won the Heisman Trophy, college football’s top honor, in 1968 and was the first pick in the NFL draft a few months later.

He quickly became a star running back for the Buffalo Bills mesmerizing fans with his “Electric Company” offensive line. He was the first NFL player to surpass 2,000 rushing yards in a season, with 2,003. He retired from the NFL in 1979.

But he didn’t drop out of sight.

He was a instant hit on TV and in the movies, but it was his trial in 1995 for the double-murder of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend, Ron Goldman. He was acquitted in a sensational verdict that is still debated today.
